Is it just me or does anyone else see the mew BOK Arena appearing to look like a giant roll of Duct Tape lying on its side? This is from the view from I-244 to the north of the building
It appears the older the silver covers on the building get the more they resemble the surface of Duct Tape.
Took the 2nd street exit off of I-244 yesterday and drove up close to the new building. Many of the silver color panels surrounding the building are stained with a black substance that appears to be leaking through what ever those are made from.
Guess that is why the designer said a building is like a child, He looks at each building as a parent would a child. "They never grow up like you expect," said Pelli.

I'm wondering just how many times this same comment can be made.

I, for one, think it's a pretty damn good looking piece o' ducktape.
We have already been down this street for a while now.

I agree.
Some people need to learn to let it go.
I expected this though, the closer the grand opening drew close.
I think it's a rather handsome building.
Don't like it? Don't look. Don't attend.
Instead, continue to watch your black and white 12 inch TVs and listen to your Victrolas. Because that's where a lot of you act like you're stuck in. The past.
I just love how quick some want to tell a poster what to do.
Actually it was the first time I had driven by the building since they had installed the dull silver covering. Just looked over at it and I saw a giant roll of Duct Tape. Maybe because I have used Duct Tape alot in the past that it resembles that to me.
First I had thought of it while I was driving. I thought the building looked out of place from the beginning, but the Duct Tape color and texture seems to of topped that. Majority of folks I know think it looks out of place.
I have no intentions of attending any of the events they have booked thus far, none are on my must see list. Speaking of 12" TVs and Victrolas and living in the past, aren't The Eagles are quite dated as well?
Actually many people I know think the past was way better than today. The food was better, gas was cheaper, taxes were less, crime was lower, streets were smoother, and people were smiling most the time in Tulsa.

Can't be any worse than people trotting out the same over-used line about how they see the arena. One person said it already and it got blown up into a runaway thread. If you're gonna criticize something, for Pete's sake at least be original about it.
Dude, I never heard anyone else refer to it as a roll of Duct Tape. Just stating what I thought it looked like, a giant roll of duct tape.
Great Streets? Less Crime? One of the fascinating things about looking through the Beryl Ford Collection is noting how bad the roads seemed to be "back in the good ol days". Not to mention seeing photos of the inside of peoples houses. Most barely had anything, hardly anything on the walls, basic furniture at best and not a lot of "stuff" piled all over the furniture either. The past wasnt all it was cracked up to be. If your not happy today, for most its cause they choose not to be.

Dont get me started on the food. There is far more variety and selection today than there was when I was a kid. Let alone when my parents were growing up. We take for granted stuff that would have been considered a rare treat or luxury.
I think the arena looks fantastic. Looks like a roll of duct tape the same as the eiffel tower looks like a transmission line tower. Guess the arena to some people in this town is like giving pearls to swine.

And really, I guess I let myself get a little 'run up' about it. To each their own. I'll be attending events there at least 32 times in the coming 12 months, probably more.
And to see those photos with 29 cent gas. I'm old enough that the cheapest I can remember it was 40 cents at the Derby station west of Peoria on 15th Street. I used to live on Elgin just north of 15th until I was 6, until the east leg of the IDL forced us out.
The arena looks great to me.

I like the arena. I have seen it a couple of times from the west view floating down the Arkansas and it fits nicely into the skyline. A little drab but no complaints from me. Are they going to polish it?
My sister and many of her friends, however, think it looks like a crushed Keystone Light beer can and is surprised that Coors didn't identify it quickly and sponsor the thing. Can't expect art to please everyone.
Artist don't drag up old county road and race riot pics to impugn the past. Its like perusing through a jr. high school yearbook and laughing at the hair styles. Believe me, the fifties and sixties in Tulsa was golden and yes, better than today. For dating purposes, I saw and purchased gas at 19 cents a gallon.
Tulsa was a fast growing, progressive, diverse, hard working town that was growing faster than infrastructure could keep up. Kind of like South Tulsa now. It was rough around the edges. They were experimenting with asphalt type roads after having used brick and concrete. Getting the right mix that didn't crack or wash away seemed to be difficult. Tulsa was one of the first to use traffic circles, one way streets and parking meters. At one time we actually had self esteem. Oil Capitol. Cleanliest City. Magic City.
I love the Beryl Ford pics that show a 20's era skyline behind a "Green Acres" dilapidated farm house with its roof caving in. We were swallowing up farm land, pecan groves, and river bottom as fast as we could.

The BOK Arena, it be okay! ;)
I have not been on this forum for many months.
I have done business with several SMG managed venues. I actually prefer to produce events at privately owned venues. Much less red tape and burecratic nonsense to deal with. Besides the fact that the costs are much less and one can provide a much lower ticket price with the same quality of entertainment.
Several other production companies including Live Nation, Clear Channel, SRO have prouduced motorcycle events at the Lazy E Arena and other high-rent facilities in Oklahoma. Some successfull and others not so successful. One that offered a $30,000 purse and had a budget of over $50,000 did not sell many tickets, around 250 total, and was produced as recently as last fall.
One needs to know the market and what the ticket buyers and participants budgets are for multiple events. A one time event may have the luxury of commanding a higher ticket price and be held in a five star facility. I and many others in Oklahoma have discovered that a lower cost and less fancy facility works better than the overpriced and over glamous buildings for many motorcycle folks. Not always the case such as with annual single events, but with a series and ongoing events the lower costs the better for the profit side of the equations.
Our entire budget for one of out Indoor races is around $3,000 total for each event. That would not even cover hauling in dirt at the BOK Center.
I have produced AMA Pro-AM Arenacross races at the Myriad, an SMG managed building in Oklahoma City, Claremore Expo Center an SMG managed building in Claremore and at a few others. The OKC Myriad management group from SMG met with us and informed us that after we had a contract that we were not allowed to place more than 10 inches of dirt on the floor. They insisted the Floor had a load limit of 250 lbs per foot.
Crazy rules and retulations such as curfew hours at State Fair Speedway in OKC, noise limits and additional rent for running over time when producing races is a deal breaker for me. I have produced several events at SFS in OKC, and was constantly being told by the Fair Board what, where, why and when we could do what we needed to do. Others may enjoy being told by folks that have no clue about a sport on how to produce it, I have no desire to work under those conditions. Besides I produce most of my events because I like to, to me they are more of a big party of friends getting together than a business deal. I don't do it just for the money.
Mike Kidd rented the Tulsa Civic Center for a BooKoo Arenacross couple of years back. It cost him $3,500 to re-sticker the Hocky Rink after they took out the dirt they brought in to build the track.
Live Nation does have an AMA Arenacross on their schedule in February of 2009 at the BOK Center. Arenacross races are those held in smaller venues that cannot accomodate a Supercross size track. Based on other Arenacross events I and others have produced in Tulsa, it may sell some tickets, but I doubt if it will sell out. Houston of Honda's MX team Semi was on the highway this afternoon and they drove past the arena when they turned off of 412 onto hwy 75.
Several of us including many regional producers of events asked the design team questions regarding the floor size, load limits, cargo door size, loading dock capabilities and more. Don't remember them ever sending a questionaire regarding the requirements of producers of ongoing and annual events held in Oklahoma.
It is a shame the designers did not make the floor space large enough to accomodate a 1/4 mile oval track, and connect an 8 acre exhibition hall with adjoining doors. Could of been a great place for Super Cross, 1/4 mile Midget races and much more. Instead it is similar to the Myriad, a hockey rink with 20,000 seats.
In 1964 in the Tulsa a person earning minimum wage could purchase 15,000 miles worth of gasoline at 15 miles per gallon, for just four weeks wages. Today that same distance worth of gasoline takes 22 weeks of today's minimum wage work.
In 1964 in Tulsa one could buy 48 bottles of Coca Cola for the same price as one bottle of Coca Cola today. And a Griffs or Sandy's Cheeseburger was 19 cents, fries were a nickle.
And there was no sales tax on any purchase less than 50 cents as the tax then waw 2 cents on a dollar here. By making three separate transactions for a $1.00 total purchase when I was a kid, I got 6 pieces of bubble gum for the 2 cents I saved in tax, gum was 3 pieces for a penny then.

At one time Tulsa had 6,000 people per square mile paying for that square miles roads and infrastructure. For a long time it had around 3,000 people per square mile paying for that square miles worth of roads, water, sewer, electrical, cable, fire police, trash pick up, mowing, and other infrastructure. Now we are around 2,000 people per square mile trying to pay for ever more infrastructure, wider roads, etc. With an aging population and cities competing for the next labor pool of young people.
More infrastructure, less people paying for it = worse infrastructure or higher taxes per person.
Plus people are in worse shape, with worse health and more fancy meds, medical equipment, procedures, specialists, etc. than the "good old days". Both factors increase costs on all of us in many ways. Though dying then of something thats readily curable today might be seen as a pretty high cost.
Its also interesting to look at how the average person actually lived. I see those Beryl Ford photos that showed the insides of shops and homes. The homes were practically empty by todays standards. The shops seemed empty and bare as well compared with todays stores. Even most working class people have a TV or 2 or 3, easily have a radio or CD player, plus a computer, are paying for the added digital cable, sattelites, radio towers, "more infrastructure" etc that connect eveerything. We all likely have air conditioning, and many appliances. Btw, todays Burger Joints also have a lot more "stuff" including LCD TV's lol, and are paying for more infrastructure, medical costs, "even if not covering their own employees, we all pay one way or another" etc. Also people are apparently buying more burgers, cokes and fries than they need regardless of "todays high prices".
I want an arena and am willing to pay taxes for it. I dont want more sprawl and dont like having to pay more taxes for that. So there we are.
all I know is I'd like to get some of that 33 cent premium being advertised. probably higher quality that the pee water **** we have today too....only drawback is its probably leaded.
Hey, I did my part yesterday. I photographed the 'duct tape roll' for posterity.

I'd like to live the goood ole daze, however, I would miss my VCR and a few things like that. Those items were not around in by-gone eras. If you wanted to see a movie you could only see the films there were currently playing for 25 cents, you could not pick up a movie at a store. I could live without a cell phone and many other modern things, but I like my TV and VCR. I think the cars were much better long ago, they had no computers in them and they were simple to work on. The cars were also built much stronger and were made of all metal.

I believe there was another Vans Hamburgers downtown in Tulsa and another one at 15th and Harvard, where Ron's Hamburgers original location was for years.
Wonder what happened to the Van's Hamburger folks? Anyone remember eating their burgers?
15th and Harvard - Oh by the way the gasoline was 100% gasoline then and around 105-112 octane. Factory built V-8 engines had up to 13 to one compression ratio which helped them devlop increased torque and horsepower.

On the right past the gas station you can see the Hamburger Joint. You can read Hamburgers on the sign out front. That is where Ron Baber of Ron's Hamburgers started from around 1976.
It was a dream come true for Ron Baber when he opened his tiny hamburger and chili restaurant 25 years ago.
Baber had worked 18 years for Crane Carrier when he checked out a Sunday newspaper ad to buy a hamburger stand on 15th Street just west of Harvard Avenue.
"I had built up $10,000 in a retirement plan, and it was enough to put a down payment on this little place," Baber said recently, sitting on one of the 10 stools in the original Ron's Hamburgers & Chili. "I always loved to cook and always wanted my own place. When other guys were buying Playboy, I was buying Gourmet."
He said he worked free at Al Saab's steakhouse to learn to cook commercially, and although he first dreamed of opening a steakhouse or barbecue place, he was happy to settle for hamburgers and chili.
Ron's quickly became a popular lunch spot for workers in all walks of life.
1) We better get the keys to a perfect arena. Things like dented side panels are NOT acceptable. Fix it or it is not complete.
2) The panels do not appear to be flat. They seem to have a bit of a wave to them. Particularly at the edges. I wonder why and if that was in the specs. If not, is it the engineers fault, the design, the installation?
Is it permanent, will it go away?
If they were acceptable in that way, so be it. But if not, please hold someone accountable.
3) The "runs" or "streaks" appear to be nothing more than dirt streaks. Hopefully from construction, dirt gathered on the window sills and streaked down. That should be minimized after construction... but like any large structure it will need to be washed on occasion.
- - -
Overall I'm impressed with the way it looks. I'm starting to see the flaws on the exterior, but don't want to be nit picky. I still think the design itself is very interesting and the overall effect impressive.

I've found one sofar; picture really only shows me at about four sitting on the neigbor's porch at 1426 S Elgin (seen in the photo). I asked some more yesterday; it would seem that I had aunts and uncles that went to Horace Mann? school. I remember a brown/yellow brick building at the corner of 15th & Elgin, I believed it to be an apartment building. I'll keep digging until I find more than 1.

As if the sold-out Eagles as an opening act wasn't enough, the BOK Center arena has announced three more shows and a partnership with Tahlequah-based Reasor's to sell tickets to upcoming events.
On Tuesday, three more upcoming shows were announced:
Dec. 10-14: Cirque du Soleil: Tickets on sale Aug. 18. Cirque du Soleil weaves its magic in Tulsa for the first time with Saltimbanco, the very first "classic" Cirque du Soleil touring show to be presented in arena. The Saltimbanco arena tour will perform 8 shows at the BOK Center.
Tickets range from $40 to $95 for adult and $32 to $76 for children (12 years old and under); 7:30 p.m. Dec. 10-11 at 7:30pm; 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 12-13; and 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Dec. 13-14. Tickets will go on sale for Cirque Club members only on Aug.11. To become a Cirque Club member, simply connect (free of charge) to tulsaworld.com/Cirque. General public ticket sales will start Aug. 18.
Jan. 3-4: Harlem Globetrotters, on sale date to be announced. The Globetrotters is touring for its 83rd consecutive season. Since their founding in 1926, the Globetrotters have played in 119 countries on 6 continents, entertaining over 128 million fans. Tickets will be available with a limited number of $102 courtside tickets, in addition to tickets at $51 and $25.

You're just PO'd that it appears this arena is going to be successful.
Stay in Sand Springs if you hate it so much.
Some should realize that every listing is not something that is only coming because of the arena. Many would already be coming to Tulsa and have , with some having been here every year.
The proposed ampitheatre would have sold 20,000 Eagles tickets vs. only being able to sell just over 14,000 in the iconic arena because of the setup [:P]
"Art Ducto Movement"
I believe it began years ago with the Duct Tape . . .

Is this the proper atire for the grand opening night? If Oz owner Leon Newton "Uncle Leo" were still alive, I would suspect he would arrive in one of these hand crafted Duct Tape beauties !
Red Carpet or Rolled out Duct Tape?
Decisions, decisions.
Wonder if they could use multi color Duct Tape on the exterior of the building to celebrate Pride Week?

Of the three new events, 2 and 3 are pretty meh but Cirque De Soleil gathers a pretty big draw. They have shows in 3-4 hotels in Vegas running year round at like $100/ticket.

Dude, I never heard anyone else refer to it as a roll of Duct Tape. Just stating what I thought it looked like, a giant roll of duct tape.
Hey AMP, maybe you should talk to BOK Arena booking and get this event in for next year.
AMP OUTLAW WINTER NATIOANLS INDOOR RACE SERIES (//%22http://geocities.com/oreillydirttrack/%22)
Or maybe you have and couldn't and that's your reasoning for being so AMP'd about the BOK's appearance!
Being the 4star poster you are, you did miss a few past threads, such as;
BOK arena looks like a roll of cheap duct tape.
http://www.tulsanow.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10602
And don't worry MDepr2007, I'm not really trying to tell a poster [i.e AMP] what to do, other than scan previous topics before getting AMP'd!
Your words AMP -
I have not been on this forum for many months. That's the point! You've got 877 posts to your credit or dis-credit, but neglected to use that experience and wisdom to see what had beed discussed and cussed since you been gone!
The BOK is built, like it's style or not! Go there for an event or not! Comment on upcoming events or not!
This thread went from your duct tape comment to race riots to Ron's hamburgers back to duct tape. Any one of which could be a thread of it's own, as probably already has been.
Discussions on this Forum would be more productive if the subject of the thread were honored!
As pointed out, you have been around Tulsa for a long time. Your memories of our city's history are much appreciated. But let's ride a new horse. The ole grey [duct tape] mare is dead!
I can see the duct tape thing... but... if they had made it more os a golden brown color on the lower part and white on the top it would look like a cinnamin roll.
I am not crazy about the design and a lot of other things... BUT....
It's already a done deal. Now we need to be positive instead of negative and get people to go there. We need it to bring in as much money as possible.
Don't you realize if it is a failure WE still pick up the tab? Ecept the tab will be much bigger.
So, whether your heart is in it or not, watch out for lightning and start pitching the positives to anyone who will listen.
We need people to think our arena is the best darn arena in the world and that everyone who is anyone wants to be there.
That is the only way we are going to win.

Only if the different color lines are PERFECTLY placed so they look continuous...(e.g.--see above)
Hey, the duct tape and "art ducto" thing are purely for fun. We had a building on OU's campus we called the "the blender" because it looked like a Waring blender. Lots of cities have slang for their buildings. No harm will come from speaking the truth about it. It will in fact do more to endear it to us.
It was brave to follow through with the design and although most of us would have been happy with something akin to a Lego block we will still go see entertainment there.

With "quality" acts like these, it is destined for failure. It's too bad that the Ford Center will always kick our donkey with better shows and attractions. Joyce Meyer just doesn't cut it.

the wife and i are pretty excited about the Cirque show. As are several friends and my father-in-law. Cirque is a huge draw. The touring Cirque show last came to Oklahoma a few years ago with a stop at the Ford Center. So consider this something that probably would've went there again but is now coming to Tulsa.

Just went and checked the Ford Center events calendar. Looks like there is not much history before Nov 2004, but lets just look at some of the acts they had in four or five months;
Some Blazers games... we will have the oilers
Bette Midler... we have Celine
Women of Faith... we have joyce
Third Day... We have the Eagles (no idea who third day is though)
Rascal Flats... we have, um Rascal Flats
More Blazers games... more oilers games
Mannheim Steamroller... Radio City girls
Hornets game... Okay, got us there... but we will have a preseason game
More Blazers games... more oilers games
Harlem GlobeTrotters... Um ditto
Larry the Cable Guy... Jeff Dunham
WWE RAW... Whoopdeedoo
PBR Classic... Cirque
Steven Curtis Chapman... Carry Underwood, Neil Diamond...
Okay, I am getting bored of doing this, but as you see we are on an equal level from where the Ford center was in 2004... 1-2 years after it opened. I would imagine as musicians and shows start making their new tour schedules, Tulsa will be on the short list of venues to add.
Yes we will not get an NBA team, but I could care less.
I really think they have done pretty well in getting the first 4 months lined out. I am more than willing to say that 90% of these acts would not have come to Tulsa if the arena was not here.
And in response to the ampitheatre, I am assuming this was to be an outside venue? Like the Dallas superpages.com center? So you want the eagles (or any act for that matter to perform outside in august?? Sweet jesus man, that is plum nuts[:D]
It is wrong to compare Tulsa Bok Arena shows to the OKC Ford Center. They are different markets.
Compare Tulsa 2008 to Tulsa 2007.
The arena is changing the Tulsa entertainment scene and it is bringing shows that cause people to come to Tulsa.
That's why the arena is worth building.
Third Day is Christian, Tulsa has Casting Crowns as the equivalent.
