Title: DFW Metroplex info
Post by: safetyguy on August 05, 2008, 06:52:32 AM
I have just accepted a job in Irving and was wondering if any DFW transplants have suggestions where to live. Also, does anyone know of any web forums like Tulsanow to find out local information.

Also, if anyone wants to buy a house in Jenks I know where you can buy one!! [:D]

Yeah, just go to www.youreasucker.haha

[:D]

Judging from my trips down I-75, every house is less than 2 miles from a Home Depot.

No jobs here for me or I didn't have the right experience to be considered, blah blah blah. We don't want to leave, but we have to do what we have to do. I don't want to wait around for something to come along because I don't know when that will happen.

I understand that. The biggest problem I had when looking for a job was that everyone wanted someone with 5+ years of experience. Where are you supposed to get that experience if no one will give you a job! LOL.

You want to keep our young people here after high school and college? Provide plenty of entry-level opportunities. [:P]

I lived in the D/FW area back in the 1980's so alot has changed since my time. I lived in Arlington and I liked it, also west Fort Worth is nice. There are pockets of bad areas and high crime all around the MetroPlex just like any other major city. Fort Worth has a outstanding  jogging trail called the Trinity Trail, I ran that trail alot, it follows the Trinity River. The MetroPlex is like one huge city, but Dallas and Fort Worth still like to Fight with each other. Dallas hosts the Texas State fair

I hope you'll still keep posting here from Texas... Texas has those "Fire Ants" they are all over the ground and the bite & sting, each ant hill has thousands of ants they do attack people & pets. Texas has no state income tax, however prop. taxes are higher than in Oklahoma but rents are not too bad. You should be able to find a place to stay near your work. Texas has motor vehicle safety inspections, each year you have to take your car in for a safety check and a smog test then you get a sticker for the window I never liked that, however as a whole I liked living in Texas. I left Texas after I got a divorce and a job transfer to Ohio. I miss the Texas weather.

I moved back to Dallas a year ago and grew up here. Like Tulsa, there are a lot of variables that go into where you want to live. There are many options around Irving, but I don't recommend Irving itself. What part of Irving are you working in? Kids? Price range of homes?

I am not aware of any Tulsa Now type websites but I will be glad to help.

I am going to work in the Las Colinas area (W. John Carpenter Parkway). We have an infant and my wife is going to be a stay at home mom. I will be traveling quite a bit for work, so access to DFW will be important.
Just curious, what's wrong with Irving? Is it crime or schools aren't good? We have been searching online at a number of different areas like Carrolton, Grand Prairie, Euless, Bedford, Arlington, North Richland Hills, Hurst, Edgecliff Village. We are looking at the $200-225K range. Any input would be appreciated.

If you need the airport, Arlington is your city. Just a straight shot up highway 360 will take you into the airport. I don't how the airport is today but when I lived in Arlington, after you parked your car at the airport you'd take a  tram to your terminal. They had a "red" route a "green" route and so on depending on where you parked and the terminal you were going to.. The trams left you out at you gate and terminal. I have not been at D/FW airport in many years so it may of all changed. South Arlington near I-20 has some nice homes. I lived at the Indian creek Apartments in Arlington at park Row and Highway 360. They were nice apartments back in the 1980's they look run down today with alot of crime..

What about Coppel?  I have family there, they loved the schools, three kids graudated from there.  I think its an easy commute to both Los Colinas and DFW.  It's VERY close to my fav, Grapevine Mall . . .

Yeah, we had looked at Coppel, I just forgot about it when I was saying where we had been looking. We are hopefully making a trip down in a few weeks before I officially start working. I have temp housing for 30 days provided by the company that I won't be starting until I get back from 2 weeks of training in Canada. My wife and daughter aren't moving until our house is sold because we can't swing 2 mortgages.

360 is a nightmare.  It's a 'straight shot' as in the highway is physically straight.  you'd want to avoid that highway at all costs.

and yes, i moved from DFW metroplex to tulsa in 2006.  Things are a little bit different than the 80s.  I'm sure there are nicer areas of Arlington.  I never saw any.

my two cents.

For good schools, home price and close proximity to DFW, look at Bedford or Euless.
Stay away from North Richland Hills and Hurst. Colleyville is nice and Arlington has nice homes in mid area near Pantego.
Good Luck

That's intresting. I figured alot would of changed. I lived at the Indian Creek Apartments at Park Row & 360, today Indian Creek  apartments has section 8 housing and is crime riddled, parts of Arlington were not too good in the 1980's but south Arlington around I-20 were very nice with nice homes. On Collins road they knocked down down alot of housing and apartments to put up a ball park. Much has changed no question about that. I liked the weather & the long seasons, in November it's still warm & sunny in Texas while in Ohio it's snowing. Winters are short.

If you avoid 360 how do you get to the airport? I went to the airport alot and it was real easy shooting straight out on 360 it takes you into the terminals. I never had a problem, but it was along time ago.

I know it flies in the face of home ownership benefits, but you might consider renting for six months so you wouldn't be under the gun to buy a place and could look more at your leisure.

Also keep in mind, with a major election in November and oil prices retreating, there could be a correction in real estate in Oklahoma and Texas, which, to this point have been relatively insulated from the sub-prime debacle and economic problems facing the rust belt.

I'd be a little itchy about buying near the top of the bubble.

Just my .02.  I hope the new job is everything you were hoping for.  I worked for a company HQ'd in Irving for seven years, fortunately, they let me office out of Tulsa.  I enjoy visiting DFW, but thankful I don't have to deal with the traffic and sprawl on a daily basis.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. We have found a realtor through an old co-worker of mine who lives in the Dallas area. We are hopefully going to be going to Dallas in a few weeks to look at houses.

From my experience with Dallas traffic, not many roads/highways are going to be a breeze to get around like you can in Tulsa. I remember when I moved here people wanted to know what I thought of the traffic. My response was there's traffic here?? Coming from Columbus, OH this is nothing. I'm just multiplying Columbus a couple times for Dallas traffic.

I always loved Fort Worth, the cost of living and prop. taxes are less than Dallas and Fort Worth has alot to offer such as the famous Stockyards & Billy Bob's Texas and the Botanic Gardens, and a great Science Museum. West Fort Worth has nice homes around  River Oaks and Ridgmar Mall area. However, That's too far to drive for working in Irving. I lived in Fort Worth for two years before going to Arlington in 1982.

I heard that the TV show "Dallas" is doing a 30-year re-union that is open to the public at the South Fork Ranch. I don't know how much the tickets  cost but the whole cast will be there. Great news for any fans of the "Dallas" show. I'd like to see Linda Gray and Victoria Principal in person. The date is Aug. 22nd. The house will be intresting to see to.

South of White Rock Lake is a nice affordable area.  But, as with most areas in Dallas, don't go too far South.
