Title: BOK Center Naming
Post by: tulsa78 on August 29, 2008, 07:12:16 am
I'm glad Tulsa has finally built something that will help our city grow. On the other hand the majority of this project was paid for by tax dollars. Why should it be named after a corporation? I know money was 'donated' for all the naming rights and other uses that will generate the 'donors' more money than they spent... but at least let Tulsans be proud of what their tax dollars have built and not let a company claim the spotlight title for the sake of advertising.

Right or wrong, it is the way of today's world and corporate America. Naming rights are being sold on just about everything for a multi-million dollar donation, and the only way to get the donation is if you put there name on the facility.

Look at how many times the baseball fields in Houston and Dallas/Arlington have changed names.

You are exactly right.  Look at Comiskey park...errr US Cellular Field in Chicago or the Hoosier Dome in Indianpolois...oops I mean the RCA Dome.  If I remember right, RCA paid something like 17 million or so for naming rights for 10 years back in the early 90's.

Unfortunately/fortunately (depending on how you look at it) it has "worked" for quite a few year's and I don't see it going away anytime soon.

I am selling the naming rights to my children.

For the right price, I will call my son Quizno's.

It's annoying to me, but "Naming Rights" does help to get a little nicer facility and equipment.  Didn't Williams donate the $$ for the new Megatron?

Williams paid for the scoreboard upgrades and are named as the "replay sponsor."

BOK bought naming rights to the arena as a whole.

Arby's bought naming rights to the box office.

Ford, Cox, Pepsi and Cherokee Casinos paid money to be titled "The Official <whatever> of the BOK Center"

Other sponsorships include money for the outside marquee (which is still being built) and the landscaping, pavers, terrazo floor, lighting of the icon wall, etc.

Yes, around $2 mil. The scoreboard cost a total of like $3.6 mil, I think.

Oh, I got my info from the Tulsa World (http://"http://www.tulsaworld.com/webextra/content/2007/slideshows/arena/deconstructing.pdf") so it was probably just inaccurate reporting unless 'and etc' includes things other than the scoreboard. The scoreboard is very impressive though, I must say.

obscure reference to a Martin Short character on SNL who idolized Pat Sajak and ended his sentences with "I must say".

Are the receipts viewable to the public of all this extra donated money and how it was spent?
I don't want what some lacky at the Tulsa World wrote either.

From Wiki...

"Tulsa County completed 8,000 seat Robert B. Sutton Stadium in 1981, naming it for its chief benefactor, a local oil executive. Sutton, however, was convicted in 1982 of fraud, and as a result the County renamed the park Tulsa County Stadium. In 1989, Drillers Stadium received its current name. The stadium now seats 10,997 , making it the largest stadium in Double-A baseball.

Originally a multi-purpose stadium with an artificial surface playing field, it now features a Prescription Athletic Turf (PAT) grass surface. Since its installation in 1993, the field has regularly been rated one of the best in the Texas League by players and managers.

Though it now primarily serves as a baseball stadium, monster truck rallies, unsanctioned fights between The Nation of Drillation, and concerts can be held here."

I'm sure if you wanted them bad enough, you could ask for them.

They do a progress report monthly located on the vision2025.info website usually which has the bullet items listed.

Any company bagged the naming rights to the restrooms?

Bolton needs to go on a diet. There are way too many acts in a short period for a city the size of Tulsa.

FOTD has already taken notice of the dive in local club attendance and lack of support for local musicians as disposable entertainment dollars get reapportioned towards the "corporate"
entertainers. What once made Tulsa distinguished from other towns may be evaporating and replaced with commonality.

Support your local musicians, your ballet and your opera. They may lose their luster like the Phillarmonic did.

I know a ton of people driving up from Dallas for the Beck/MGMT show at Cain's on September 28.  It's a show Dallas and OKC didn't get, but Tulsa did.

Maybe Tulsa is showing it supports these mid-size shows pretty well--or Beck just loves Cain's.
