BBQ'N MUSIC HITS BIXBY ONCE AGAIN
The most popular event of the year for the Bixby Community is May 8th & 9th. The barbeque competition, music, and thousands of attendees create two days of fun and family, all for charity that furthers community development.
Bixby, OK: On May 8th and 9th, Washington Irving Memorial Park will once again host the Bixby BBQ'n Music Festival. The festival is two days of the State's best Barbeque and music all rolled into one and is a community fundraiser created by the Rotary Club of Bixby.
Officially sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society and an official State of Oklahoma Barbeque Competition, the festival is truly the best barbeque competition in Oklahoma. Competitors from Kansas, Texas, Arkansas and all over Oklahoma flock to Bixby in hopes of winning the grand prize of $1500, amongst other awards and prizes. Competition Taster Kits - $5 - From 11 AM - 1:30 PM on Saturday
This is great for those families and individuals attending the festival, as the famous "taster kits" can be purchased on Saturday for $5. Taster kits allow one to sample the food from every competitor at the event. On Saturday from 11:00a.m.- 1:00p.m, the public can sample the barbeque from the competing teams, while the supplies last. They can also vote for their favorite Team to win the People's Choice Award.
All New Children's Play Area
There is also an area that is dedicated to kids. Jupiter Jump, Giant Slide, miniature horses, face painting and clowns are enough to keep all the kids happy and allow parents to enjoy the food and the music. Wrist bands for the kids area will be available for $10.
"We hope everyone will come out to the Festival. In addition to helping the community, this is an opportunity for family fun, meeting new people, spending spring-time in our beautiful park - all while enjoying good music and delicious barbecue," said Ericka Sherod, President, Bixby Rotary Club.
Coins For Kids: Presenting sponsor will be onsite with their Fundraising Van which is equipped with an ATM and 2 coin counters. The public is encouraged to bring their spare change and donate to Bixby Public Schools projects by tossing it into a MidFirst coin counter. MidFirst will match donations dollar for dollar up to $5,000.

The Rotary Club of Bixby used funds from the 2003, 2004 and 2005 BBQ'n Blues Festivals to build the new Rotary Club of Bixby Amphitheater which is located in Washington Irving Memorial Park. Proceeds from previous Festivals enabled the Club to present Bixby Public Schools with a large electronic marquee sign, complete with a digitized message board. Located on Memorial Drive, the sign promotes school activities from PTA meetings to athletic events.
Volunteers are a huge contributor to the success of the event. "Every year, we are blown away by the support and numbers of individuals that dedicate their time to help us put this event on," stated Fred Beasley, Past President of the Bixby Rotary Club. "It is great to know that our efforts to better serve the community are in turn supported greatly by our community." About the BBQ'n Music Festival: Built on a goal of raising funds to erect a digital sign for the Bixby Public Schools, a fledgling Bixby Rotary Club took on the mammoth task of creating a festival that in 2002 attracted 43 BBQ teams for competition and 8 blues bands to entertain. It was a huge success with almost $30,000 raised for the sign to be built (the one that is on Memorial, south of 131st.).
The 2006 festival had 9 blues bands and 59 BBQ teams, while the 2007 festival had 9 blues bands and 68 BBQ teams. 2006 and 2007 profits were chosen to help Bixby Community Outreach Center, as well as other Bixby Rotary projects that help serve the community.

Sounds like a great event with great support. And, I'm glad that it is in the Tulsa area. I've always believed that the BBQ chefs in NE Oklahoma surpass those elsewhere in this state.
I went to this a few years back and bought the taster kit(paper plate and fork)When we started going to each vendor they were giving these tiny pieces and I told the Wife there is no way that I will get my money worth like this.
Let me tell you by the time we were thru going to each and every vendor, I was SO STUFFED i thought i was going to be sick. It was a fun time and worth getting out for.
Also, Look for Big Danny Beck there he is a BBQ nut. And a real nice guy too.

Danny has surprisingly good BBQ. He doesn't compete in many of the categories, and if he does, I've not seen him win anything, but I like the Q!

its not his, he puts his name and face on something he has nothing to do with, just like he is, a fake, he is not the "good ol boy" that he portrays on TV, quite the contrast to his "real" self.
NEVER turn your back when you are talking to him, one of those taster forks may go right in.

That's is weird I just met him once at the route 66 car show in Sapulpa last year and he seemed like a very nice and genuine guy.
I sat next to him on a flight to Detroit a few years ago. He was a great conversationalist.

My dad bought a car from him in 1982.
He walked up to my dad at an event in 2006, and he remembered my dad's name, the car he bought and the names of my sister and I 24 years later. It took my dad a while to realize who he was talking to.
He's never been anything but a gentleman every time I've talked to him.
Driven, ambitious, successful business owners frequently have little time for the entitlement minded, and sometimes that can come off as negative. I respect your opinion, but have no reason to share it.
from what i understand they are still looking for judges for the bbq in Bixby. Get in touch with the organizers if you want to volunteer.
Prey that the weather holds out. The park grounds look good, plenty of grass. A few days of dry weather and some wind and things should be perfect.

won't happen this week likely (dry weather, that is). It might dry off a little today and some tomorrow, but the weekend calls for rain starting on Friday afternoon.

I refuse to believe in sound meteorological data from Oklahoma.
Instead, I will base my weekend plans on today's extended forecast for San Diego.

That's always a good plan. My mother last year and this complained of all the rain we got. I told her not to complain to me when we have a 4 week drought. We did last year; I fully expect one this year.
I haven't mowed in 10 days and my yard looks like the Amazon. The ants, once again, are coming in the house and I've tried about everything. It may be time for professional help now.

Ya know, saying it's time for professional help opens yourself up to too many comments.
And I was making that comment lastnight about how we'll have too much rain now, and in a few months it will be drought.
And has anyone mowed in the last week and a half? I think this is natures way of trying to take the city back.
I went and had a great time. The BBQ was delicious, it wasn't too hot like The Art of BBQ can be in mid July.
