Title: We may finally run out of downtown parking
Post by: RecycleMichael on June 30, 2009, 08:20:52 AM
On Friday night, July 24th, there are three events happening downtown at the same time. The Performing Arts Center is showing "Wicked", the BokCenter has "American Idol", and it is the opening night of Dfest.

Hopefully they'll have a shuttle from OSU-Tulsa or TCC for D-Fest.

Eliminate surface parking and replace with parking garages with retail on the ground level.

Since FOTD obviously has not had his first bong hit of the day, I will channel him regarding July 24:

There have have been shows like Dane Cook who had a lot of free seats a week before the show.   Just because they have an event doesn't mean everybody is buying tickets.

OMG!  People are going to have to - like - walk a couple of blocks or something.  I'll already be there for D-Fest but I may walk through other parts of downtown just to see the spectacle.

Does the T-Town Trolley swing by these locations?

I'm attending 2/3 events (D-Fest and Wicked), both on Friday.

I'd imagine it was placed there to appease the types of people who post on the Tulsa World.  Are there very many mobility scooter folk going to these things?

Lol, so true. It is pretty ridiculous. But I'm sure righton on TW will still have something to say about no parking at "drugfest."

We have the lamest shuttle services in this town.

The Bill White parking shuttle, taking people to parking lots that are probably half a mile away on average.

We have the Drillers shuttle, taking people from the lot to the stadium.

We have shuttles for various downtown tours. On one of them, the distance from one end of the tour to the other was FOUR BLOCKS!!!

It's 0.6 miles from 9th and Boston to 3rd and Detroit.

Or maybe they're shuttling in all the suburbanites from the TCC Southeast Campus  ;)

To be honest, I'd never heard of Dane Cook prior to advertising for his show began so that doesn't shock me.  I didn't hear any ads for him until 2-3 weeks before the show on The Edge.  I thought they were saying "Dave Cook" at first, then I remembered that David Cook was playing at the Cain's.

FWIW, I think FOTD is FOS when it comes to his statements like "too many acts chasing too few dollars".  Just figured I'd get the jump on him while he was still comatose this morning.

Pretty sure you have 2 more blocks to go there.

Yea it would only be about 10 or 11 blocks, so about a 5 or 6 minute walk and most likely quicker than waiting for the trolley.

Pretty brisk walk considering 11 blocks is just short of a mile. I can't run a 5-6 minute mile any more but I can walk one in 12 minutes. Still, its not that far.

Even a 12 minute mile is brisk for most folks.  I regularly walk about 2 miles during my lunch break when the weather is reasonable. We don't have a shower available at work.

I don't think I would want to walk a mile when it's still 90 deg out and I would be going to dinner or a show.  35 deg and wind blowing 20 mph is not much fun either. Rain wouldn't be too bad unless it was a toad strangler and/or wind blowing strong.

A 10 minute wait between transportation during the busy times seems to work in other cities.

I'd wait for the shuttle from TCC instead of walking from there. I'm also fat.

Last year I drove downtown, parked my truck a few blocks away where parking was plentiful and free and rode my bike in from there. I left it at Joe Momma's while I walked DFest, then rode my bike back out at the end of the night.

I'll encourage my employees to do the same this year. Most of them are bike riders anyway.

As much as I wish these events were spread out a bit, I'm also liking the opportunity to prove to the "more parking" folks that there simply is no need for more parking downtown. If the 24th doesn't do it, nothing will.

But that's the problem. The "more parking" crowd will see the fact that they can't park directly in front of the stage as proof that more parking is needed. They will likely never be satisfied, and so the trick is to stop trying to satisfy them.

I hope you guys stay packed over the weekend and you pick up some new Joe Momma's repeat clientele.

Is there no public bus transportation in Tulsa?  If not I guess you guys don't have park & ride areas.  It would be cool to have that and put some of those pink bikes you guys mentioned by the river walk into those park & ride zones.  So people could bike around downtown and then link back up easier to there cars at the park & ride.  Does your shuttles or buses have bike racks on them? Just in case it gets too hot.

Visit the link above to see what Tulsa offers.  There is also a so-called "Tulsa Trolley" which is actually a rubber tired internal combustion powered vehicle. (I catch h%ll if I call it the bus it is.)  It is privately owned and offers free rides to parts of town on selected days. I think it is still running. I believe its goal is to promote the entertainment and eating businesses.

MTTA is the local bus service, I think they have bike carriers, not certain on that point.

Our busses have bike racks on them.  Occasionally you actually see them being used too.

It sure seems like downtown is always feast or famine when it comes to big events.  Elton John/Billy Joel concert on St. Patrick's Day.  Bruce Springsteen on same night as All American Rejects and BB King (technically not downtown, but close enough).  Now Wicked/D-fest/American Idol.  Who's "in charge" of this place?
