Title: Late night Chinese..
Post by: nathanm on February 22, 2010, 07:39:52 PM
Surely there's some Chinese, Sushi, or other asian restaurant in Tulsa that stays open past 10 on weeknights. Surely?

Sorry, I don't know of anything like that. Late night food is one of those things that I dislike most about Tulsa. Our selection is extremely poor.

Every other city and college town has at least one eatery in most bar areas that's open until after bar time. We don't even seem to have that. I've never understood why places like the Brook aren't open until 3am. With our status as a very fat state, it shouldn't be that difficult for me to get food after 10pm.

Even stuff that's open really late in every other town closes before bar time here, like Wendy's and Steak n Shake.

-Kim's (or Kit's) takie outie on 81st and Sheridan stays open til 11 I think, but quality isn't that great.
-Number 1 Kitchen in Broken Arrow stays open late as well and their food is pretty decent.

Other places with good Chinese food are:
-Fortune Chef (several locations)
-China Cafe in Glenpool

If I had to rank the four it would be like this:
1. China Cafe
2. Fortune Chef
3. Number 1 Kitchen
4. Kims

I'm a huge fan of China Cafe. Their stuff is very tasty. I remember when they came over from Houston to get away from the big city life so they relocated to Glenpool. Houston has some of the best oriental food places in the states and they brought that over with them. No one can touch their egg drop soup or sweet and sour chicken. Downside is that they take cash only.

Thanks for the suggestions, Turismo.

I think it's sad that the best late-night dining option here is the grocery store.  :o

Not that 11pm on weekends is much better. In The Raw and Osaka on 81st are both open till then.

Yokozuna stays open the latest. Their hours are Friday - Saturday 5:00 pm - Midnight.

No idea why they have the early closing times. I agree, the weekday hours are ridiculous.

If more people ate after 10pm, I'm sure restaurants would stay open later, at least the ones that serve food which is worth a crap.

I question whether restuarant owners even know if there's a market for late night food. So many of them close as soon as there's a little lull, even if it's an hour before their posted closing time. If a place is never open past 10pm, how do they know nobody wants food after 10pm?

I don't believe either of those places serve food. More like Soylent Green.

Soylent Green is people!

I guess I thought the goal was late night.  Don't remember seeing any notations about "quality" or "good".  There was a "pretty decent" for Number 1 Kitchen, and yeah, it ain't too bad.

Yokozuna's apparently adjusted their hours. Now they close at 11pm on Friday and Saturday. That saddens me. I thought downtown was turning a corner in terms of food after 10pm.

Joe Momma's is good, but it being the only downtown restaurant that's open late, I can only eat it so many times a month.

Red Arrow;

HUH???
Not saying that at all.  Have a couple very good friends who are Chinese and love them a great deal.  Very much people.

And I love the food - even the Americanized stuff most restaurants sell in the states.  But then, I like pretty much all food...

Well restaurants are businesses too.  On a weeknight there just isn't enough business to justify the cost.  Sure there are some that would like dining options that late but the majority still eat well before then.  Why pay four employees to keep a place open when the operational cost of staying open versus the income from the few people coming in might net you a profit of under $100 on a good night, and little guarantee that you wouldn't have just as many nights that you lost money.  This is not a town that never sleeps lol. Ten-ish years ago whataburger and village in were about the only places open all night.  McDonald's didn't even have a twenty four hour location.  Buy the food early thats why the invented microwaves lol.

I kind of thought so.  Didn't want to take a chance.  There are sometimes some really bizarre things advanced in serious fashion.  (Like anything by Pat Robertson, Richard Roberts, etc)

It's 9:40 pm on a Friday night. I just barely got my pizza order in time. Papa John's stops taking delivery orders at 9:40pm on Friday night.

That's right, the Papa Johns next to the University of Tulsa stops taking delivery orders at 9:40 pm. On a Friday night.

(before anyone dings me on ordering shitty pizza, it's all shitty in this town. At least if I'm getting shitty pizza, it might as well be cheap and shitty. Beats pizza that's twice as expensive and mediocre, like hideaway)

Au contraire...

Joe Mama's downtown is very good.

As is La Roma at 61st and Sheridan.

Umberto's at 21st and Harvard is fairly authentic NYC style.

Also, Mario's Pizzeria at 51st and Harvard is also NYC style.

Papa John's is crappy pizza and not even worth what relatively little it costs.  Branch out, man, you're killing yourself.  Still, ridiculous that they shut down delivery at 9:40 on Fridays!  At least one pizza place near my school stayed open until 2:00 on the weekends, delivery included.

I've had joe momma's multiple times. It's not good at all. mediocre crust. last time we were inspecting the pizza closely to see if there was any sauce on it. If you looked really, really close, you could spot a little bit of sauce here and there, so little that you couldn't even taste it. Some of their gimmick pizzas are OK, but they fail at the basics. Plus $10 for crappy pizza beats $20 for crappy pizza.

I love Joe Momma's for many reasons, but I've learned to avoid their pizza.

I absolutely despise NYC pizza. Pizza should have good, thick crust and it should not be soaked with grease.

The only pizza places I've found to be average or better in this town are d'oro at 31st and Sheridan (ridiculously cheap). Savastano's is also decent, but 121st and Memorial from downtown feels only slightly closer than driving to Chicago for pizza.

I believe they've moved to the Plaza at 106th & Memorial (by the Spirit Center)

Of all the average chain pizza places in this town Papa John's is far from cheap.  While the taste is ok i'm just pointing out that it's not cheap in comparison.

I agree about Joe Momma's being overrated.  We went to the new location to try out the new "gourmet" pizza oven pizza.  We paid nearly 17 bucks for a medium pizza that looked like a small to me, as it only had 6 small slices.  It tasted ok, but to me was hardly worth the hoopla i'd been hearing.  I'll take a good Pepperoni pizza over a few specialty toppings any day.

As for Mario's I refuse to give them my money.  When we had the ice storm a few years back they were one of the few places open in the area when it was in the small shopping center at 51st and harvard that has since been torn down.  I tried calling for two hours before hand to order but it was busy the whole time.  I drove over there and arrived 30 mins before closing.  I was told it was too late to order new pizza and all they had was 3 slices left and the guy looked at me and said "you want them or not?" I said not and walked out.  I'll take an average pizza for an average price over a supposedly good pizza, if i have to deal with some jerk with a chip on his shoulder.  And for the record the busy signal was coming from the phone dangling off its hook.  Guess answering the phone AND making pizza was just too much for them to handle.

Personally I love Salvastano's, but the downside is the price.  $40 for two pizzas and some breadsticks is just a bit high for my tastes.

I hear a lot of people complain about pizza hut, mazzio's etc... but its just pizza.  If I wanted 4 stars I'd go eat at a restaurant that is capable of serving 4 star food.  Pizza is pizza and while some is definitely better than others its still just pizza.

Quite a spectrum of tastes.  Personally, I can't stand NY-style pizza, but the places I mentioned were praised by aficionados of the grease.

D'Oro pizza?  Some of the worst I've ever had.  :)

Normally I'd agree with you, but they've had that special, large pizzas for $10, as many toppings as you want. That's the main reason I chose Papa John's.

None of it's that good in this town, so I might as well go for half price. Which is the same reason I'll eat D'oro every now and then, three mediums for $15.

I agree that it's not that good. But the choices here seem to be expensive pizza that's not very good and cheap pizza that's not very good. So I go for cheap pizza and eat it much less often than I used to living in various places with good pizza.

I said to heck with it a few weeks ago and actually decided to try the new Dominoes pizza and was mildly surprised.  For $5 a pop, they weren't bad.  Now if I have the money for better I would pass it over, but if your wanting to do something cheap and have it edible, you should try them.  They have improved a lot.

Does Oktommy think that an ice storm is just business as usual and everyone should cater to his personal "needs".  Now there is some entitlement feeling!

And since nobody else was open at the time, my bet is they were probably insanely overloaded and overworked.  And yet we get sniveling about "my needs"...

When a better complaint about Mazzio's is that it is only fair pizza.

Whew!

In The Raw in Norman stays open until at least midnight on weekends and as a 'late night' sushi and drink menu.  Not sure why the ones in Tulsa do not stay open later than 11, especially the one on Brookside.

I think they may be afraid to take the risk in the Tulsa Market. That said once the economy evens out a bit, if a place or two in each "district" stayed open late and made it known they where open late it might be a good gamble to take.

I agree with you, it's really not that bad.  They actually carry a white garlic sauce as an option now and sliced smoked sausage as a topping.  I'd probably rate them currently the best of the average.

Not quite sure where that attitude came from.  For the record they were the only pizza place open that day... in that area, there were other places open.  When I walked in just over 30 minutes before they closed there were 3 people sitting there eating and the guy looking bored behind the counter.  Personally if he was busy all day he should have been damn happy for the business.  And regardless of how busy they were or were not that is no excuse to be rude to a customer.  Maybe you don't expect good service when you go spend your money somewhere but I sure as hell do and if I don't get it I'm still as pleasant as I can be, I just don't return.  If a business of any kind doesn't want my money it's no skin off my nose. My guess is more likely your rude to whatever type of customers you serve, so you don't flinch when you receive the same treatment.
