Title: Grocery Pt. 2
Post by: Empower Tulsa on July 31, 2010, 08:30:09 PM
Today I have received over 45 responces to my previous question as a reminder "Hello, I'm new here to Tulsa Now my understanding is that this forum area is for entrepreneur directed questions."

My follow up is since most of those that responded are shopping more then 2 stores how well would a delivery service for grocery items work?  Wether that is shopping them online for delivery or calling your order in for pick-up.

I noticed within the last three years Food Pyramid moved in and offers grocery pick-up and/ or delivery.  A Year later Reasors added grocery pick-up and as of this year Whole Foods offers grocery pick-up.

Petty's also delivers and has for decades. My mother uses Food Pyramid's service and is happy. I prefer to see what I am buying.

I like to see what I am buying too.   When I was a kid, the family would get our weekend supplies at a farmers' mart.  My dad would ask for meat from the front, visible part of the tray.  One time a merchant said no, it would ruin his display.  Dad asked to see something from the rear of the tray and was not pleased.  We moved on to another merchant.

Does your mother call or go online and is she over 50?

See what you are buying on the produce and meat side is understandable but what about the canned items and seasoning as well as household are these items that you would be interested in for delivery?

I personally would prefer to see what I'm buying as well.  I think it's a matter of having it physically in front of me so I can look at say product a and product b side by side, or this variation next to that variation.

Canned items etc would be OK but if I am already going to the store, why bother with home delivery.  What time will the delivery be?  How long should I wait if they are not on time?   I can see how home delivery would be a really good deal for someone not able to get out or if they couldn't take home a large load.  It would be good for a real urban environment where a customer didn't have a car.  Out here in suburbia, I don't see it as a selling point.  I may change my mind in 20 or 30 years if I live that long.  (I remember the 50s.)

I'm another person who wants to see what I'm buying.  I really don't buy that much canned stuff.  However, I'm glad that Reasor's is offering the delivery option.  A couple of years ago I gave that serious thought when I was home recovering from surgery.  As it turned out, home delivery was unnecessary as I was able to resume driving before a grocery run was needed.  Still, it was good to have that option.

Fresh Produce seems to be the main detraction for grocery delivery.   The people who only consume prepacked processed boxed/canned foods should be happy with a delivery service, perhaps even further so due to their reduced physical abilities thanks to the garbage they exclusively eat :D

I do not now, nor would I use a grocery delivery service. Living in Phoenix as I do now, or if I was back living in Tulsa, I would rather see what I am buying, especially when it comes to produce or the meat counter and for that fact the service deli for lunch meat and cheeses. I like the thought of a delivery service, but too much of what I buy at the grocery store, like some other posters, I want to see before I buy it. I will exercise my own judgement on the cut of steak, and the shape of the vegetables, and the thickness of deli meats and cheeses. Call me old fashioned, but if I'm going to prepare it and eat it, I want to see it before I buy it.

Beat me to my food snob comment.

Didn't we go through this drill on "market research" with another poster a couple of years ago?

I have used Reasors pick up service twice.  I wish they would offer discounts like Krogers used to for their delivery pick up charge which is $5.  Krogers used to have it where for every 5 pick up services you ordered you had the next one free.  They also use to have a free pick up service about every 4 to 5 months as long as you were on their email contact list so that way new users didn't get charged for their first experience or frequent users.

I've never had a problem with Reasors or Krogers pick up service and there are notes you can add like if you want your bananas ripe or green, etc.  Plus they can substitute an item for you if they don't have it available or you can click on the option for no substitution.  Krogers was excellent with there customer service and would actually call you on your phone leave a voicemail and tell you what items they substituted and the price, or they would say hey this ice cream is on sale this week and it's cheaper then the one you purchased would you like to substitute it for that.

I saw that Sams Club has a free pick up service if you order online.  I haven't tried it yet but I want to since I get pretty much the same grocery items every month.

I want to try Reasors online order and pick up service.  Sounds pretty convenient for only $5.

Whole paycheck needs some good competition.

Let's hope for Tulsa, CBRE, and a landlord and maybe Sunflower will open a store or two here.

"The new Oklahoma City store will offer customers all-natural and organic groceries at the lowest possible prices. The market will feature fresh local produce, all-natural meats and seafood, a large bulk selection and a deli, plus natural living health and wellness products."

Could that be the chain that's going in at The Walk at Tulsa Hills?

Hope so. But I think when it is organics it's focused on those who spend for quality.

Sunflower is very much a budget organic, at least as far as meat/produce.  Your on-the-shelf goods are going to be the same price as Whole Foods but the spoilable goods are at a lower price point (and quality level).  Still a good store, though.  They were my prediction for Tulsa Hills, looking solid.

Plant your own and learn the finer points of canning and dehydration if you really want to know what's gone into your food.

You're gonna need a larger pressure cooker!  The 7 quart won't do it.  Need a 19 quart one, otherwise canning takes way too much time.  Love the results, though!!  Especially if you have a couple bushels of anything!

Sam's pick up works well.  Have used it quite a bit.  Get online and put together an order, then go get it the next day.  Fantastic.  (No produce, though)

Maybe a hybrid of shopping/delivery??  You go to the store and pick out everything, pay, then have them deliver what you chose?  Not sure any of them do that, but might be worth asking about.  Get to see what you buy, then they bring it.

Going for the vertigo stare....

I've heard that they're courting 'Sprouts Farmer Market' as their grocery store component.  There's nothing on Sprouts website to confirm it but that's the name I've heard tossed about.  We'll see.

I've heard the same.  I'd like to see Sunflower take over the now-closed D'Novo space at 61st & Yale.
