Atheists don't so much actively disbelieve as not believe in the absence of evidence to support the "theory" (I use the term very loosely) of religion. I don't believe in a god, but I know it's impossible to know whether there is a god or not, so I'm an agnostic atheist. in fact, by the very word atheism is about no belief. I would consider many self proclaimed Athiests actual Anti-Theists, or against religion, as they seem to place themselves directly opposed to religion as a whole.
