Title: Heavyweight bout: Strong Mayor vs City Manager
Post by: Admin on September 07, 2011, 08:58:17 PM
In November the citizens of Tulsa will be asked to decide between the City's current "Strong Mayor" form of government and the "City Manager" style used by cities such as OKC. Two complicated systems the citizens know little about, steeped in controversy.

How do we separate the politics from the policy? We invite the experts!

The architect of our current City Government, Former Mayor Rodger Randle and Former Oklahoma City Mayor Kirk Humphreys will go one-on-one to help you understand the ins-and-outs of both forms of government.

Is our City fine the way it is? Will changing fix the problems in City Hall? We hope that in the end, you will be prepared to decide the City's future.

When: Friday, September 16th, 5:30pm

Where: TCC Metro Philips Auditorium (9th & Cincinatti)

Cost: Free

In the recent TW there was pictures idenfying them as they were of the Tulsa mayor and Tulsa City Manager.

Is it possible Tulsa now has increased it’s every standing bureaucracy by adding another chair to the helm of a foundering ship?

I have been fighting a flesh eating virus that attack the nerve system.

I attended the meeting when the Albuquerque type of government (represented) was presented by former mayor promoting the Charter change election.  I cannot recall any discussion where a strong Mayor and City Manager were both to dictate the City Government.    I am not aware of what type of government  the City  is  operating  under.   Please advise.

It is similar to a football team. I am the offensive coordinator.

From my stand that is right.  The government of Tulsa is liken the foot ball games whereas there are many fumbles.   It reminds one as they pass the empty million dollars stadiums, that are used very little as a contribution to education , of some of those heads chosen to operate city governments.

Rome loved to build stadiums but failed to establish goverments for and of the people.

No! But the foot prints we are stepping in were made by the City of Rome.   Outsourcing again?

It's nice to see the Mayor and his staff getting along so well with the city council.

It seems that the the people did a good job identifying and eliminating some of the problem.

This is like a half dozen of one item and six of the other. Would not a city manager be like a Mayor anyow? The one thing that I like is cities that combine the county & city into one unit such as Indianapolis. Things seem to work well in Indianapolis.

You could move there but you'd have to learn how to spell it or they might be offended.

City managers are more professional administrators while Mayor's are elected and thus more political and leadership oriented.

Doesn't Fort Worth use a city manager.  You could drive downtown and find out.

I lived in 5 states. Anyhoo,  I don't see the fuss over mayor or manager. What will change or improve for the people of Tulsa under a manager? Tulsa has problems with EMSA billing customers for ER rides when they already paid the Extra tax on the water bill, and no one is sure what can be done. IMO drop the tax and do it like in other cities.
