QuoteA true Sheffield footballing legend passed away on Thursday night...for Blades of a certain age, Alan Woodward was their boyhood hero and stories of his exploits in the red and white shirt have been passed down from generation to generation.
The man with the lethal strike, regarded by many at the time to be the hardest in football, spent 14 fruitful, eventful years at Bramall Lane before eventually moving on to play for Tulsa Roughnecks in the US.
He remained in Oklahoma following those final stages of his footballing career and it was there he passed away.
Thankfully, Woodward made it to the club's recent 125th anniversary event, where fans and ex-players alike were given the opportunity to pay tribute to one of the all-time greats.
As put in the tribute released by the club: "This sad news makes it all the more important to all of us that he was able to come home and be with family, friends and fans. It was special to see him and he loved every minute, every handshake, every song and every autograph."
