Otherwise the mall is a more marketable environment. After all we dont go to the zoo and experience wild animals outside their cages..... I don't think Tulsa's problem is any worse than any other city's. IN fact, our homeless seem concentrated along the Denver corridor, vs. spread out all over downtown like in so many other cities. I agree that you can't PUSH people downtown, but getting rid of the homeless people isn't going to bring them down there....if there is nothing to do there, homeless people or not, people aren't going to show up. 1) Do something to help alleviate the problem; or 2) Move far, far away from any decent-sized town because, believe it or not, all them have homeless people. Post by: AMP on July 03, 2007, 01:05:43 am Majorities of social services are located in Downtown areas, therefore the folks that rely on those services typically live nearby. Also many low or no income and fixed income people choose to live on the bus line, and that seems to be better suited if one lives downtown.
Reason there are little or no Social Services in other areas of the Cities is the "Not in my backyard" syndrome. I always thought it would be interesting to see a town that would build Homeless Shelters, Court Houses and Jails in the suburbs and acattered around in and near shopping malls where they could be easy access for everyone. The migration of folks near the 11th street bridge and the Arkansas River dates back in time before the toll bridge was installed. The Cow Trails crossed the river near there, and later the trains came. Transients, hobos, travelers, gypsie and rainbow type folks have used that trail by the river's side for many decades if not centuries. One can always catch a glimpse of Americana watching the folks along that area walking and carrying backpacks, living off the land so to speak, only with a modern flair. For those folks living without personal transportation for what ever reasons health, vision, handicap, fixed income, the downtown area provides many forms of entertainment and a varity of food within walking distance. I have a few senior friends that live downtown and it suits their needs wonderfully. I spent an evening with them enjoying the Centenial Celebration downtown.
