From your travels, which restaurants or styles of food would you most like to see locate in Tulsa?
I always enjoyed the Maid-Rite loose burgers in Iowa.
So my vote is for Maid-Rite

What are your choices?
in n out burger
I'm from Iowa, the first time I went to a Maid-Rite (maybe i was 12-13) they asked me if I wanted my burger made right... puzzled, I responded that of course I did. I was in great despair when they gave me a sloppy joe. [:P]
Taco John's.
6 Tacos and a pound Potato Olay's (tater' tots with mexican spices) for like $5. Mmmm.

you need to add it to your "restaurants we used to have thread"... a loose meat burger (mayo, american and jalapenos), a pepsi and a dip cone- i was in heaven... alas, they only made it three years... on 21st, close to memeorial- next to where nam hai's first asian grocery used to be...
Ruth's Chris Steak House
A DQ or DK featuring cones with twist soft serve
Lawry's Prime Rib
A couple of recent DQ ads......

I think we need to have a chain called "COOTER'S" and a bunch of guys with half shirts on with beer bellies sticking out serve you. Granted I won't be there but I'm sure there's a niche for someone.
In the "be careful what you wish for" category:
Pearl's. The one I used to eat at in OKC was great. The one in Tulsa sucked.
Shizen Sushi.
Makes In The Raw, Tsunami, and Fuji taste like bait.
The only sushi I had here was at World Buffett and it tasted like what a Big Toe off of a cadaver would taste like. I politely spewed it into my napkin and that was it for me. Then, while vacationing in Carlsbad a couple of months ago, I tried seared Ahi and loved it.
In N Out Rules!
Those and the Steak n Shakes are on our always food stops when traveling on the circuit. One, they always seem to have large parking lots nearby to park the large coach, and most are consistent with food quality.
I have to stop at the In N Out in Phoenix and always along the path to California in Barstow in the desert at the one near the outlet mall. That location always has a long line, while the lonely Mickey Dees down the street sits run down and empty looking.
A giant green flag for an In N Out Burger in Tulsa. Need to be near the Universities.

Rubios. Then again, I'd settle for any place that could make a good NOT fried fish taco.
Houston's would be a nice addition.
Baja Fresh!! Not sure if it is a chain, but Black Angus would be good. I know they have two in CA.

Black Angus is a chain, it used to be called Stuart Andersons Black Angus. They do have good food and some good specials as well.
A place we have here that if I moved back to Tulsa is Arriba Mexican Grill. The first time my wife and I went was during the Hatch Chile Festival. We were having appitizers at the bar when we thought the A/C had gone out, then we realised that it was the chiles warming us up. It's not the instant heat but a come back type.

Restauraants I would like to have in Tulsa?... I would love to have restaurants open late night right smack dab in the middle of downtown. With outdoor seating. Surrounded by interesting architecture. Bustling streets and sidewalks. Near shopping and living, interesting places to go and things to see and do.

"10438 S 82nd E Avenue"? is that even in tulsa?
To second others' suggestions, In-N-Out Burger, DQ, White Castle (or Krystal) would be great.
I'd also like a good pizza joint. I've had Hideaway and I find it mediocre.
But I'd support just about any restaurant downtown if it were open at night. It could serve cow dung and I'd probably still give it a try.

Pizza in Tulsa
Have you tried Mario's New York Style Pizza at 51st and Harvard on the north side of 51st just east of Harvard?
Or Umbertos at 21st and Harvard, on the south side of 21st just west of Harvard?
Best part is you can buy it by the slice to try it out before ordering an entire pizza pie at both these locatoins.
Mario's garlic shaker seasoning rocks.

That puts it in that burgeoning area with Dickinson Starworld 20 theaters, Hideaway, Cold Stone and more. A huge development with a convention center, hotel and shops is being constructed immediately to the south.
Further down Memorial at 111th is the highly overrated Coney Beach, a new franchise from the same folks behind Camille's Sidewalk Cafes. We sought it out one night only to find out it closes at a ridiculous 9 p.m., even on weekends.
La Roma at 61st and Sheridan (NE corner) has very good pizza to compliment their mainly Lebanese menu.
By the way, Mario's and Umberto's are New York style.

I would love to see an Ed Debvics, In & Out Burger, East Side Marios, Nellos Pizza, 94th Aero Squadern, and a Texas Grill. TG at 16st and Bethany Home in Phoenix has the best chicken frid steak and it was hugh!
It'll never happen, but I'd love to have a Ted Drewes' Frozen Custard stand, based in St. Louis.
He's turned down many, many offers to franchise. But he insists the quality of his product would suffer.

I like Panera's bagels, but they aren't really traditional bagels to me.
We need an Einstein Bros or a Bruegger's. You can get Einsein Bros in Target, but it's not the same at all.
The wifey was just talking about how she wished there was a Friendly's here. Popular in Pennslyvania, it's owned by Hersheys. Pretty good food and great ice cream.

that's going to be in Regal Plaza. Not sure how they are going to get it completed by Sept 17th as most of those buildings are just shells. I wish we could get an act of congress to change the zip code boundaries to better reflect the city limits. They are tulsa by address only.

A few "White Castles" would be nice, or a "Steak 'N' Shake"- However I think "What-A-Burger" is about the best restaurant around for quick fast burgers at a good price. I wish we had them in the Mid-West. I also like "Hooters" Restaurants. I don't get to eat there offten but when I do I find it a real treat. The service is super and everyone is friendly and the food is good & served right- The "hot" food is always hot the "cold" food is always cold as it should be. I never had bad service at a Hooters. But I'm sure theres a few lazy workers at a Hooters somewhere. There always is.[:)]

ummm, possibly the secretary is an idiot... she is dead wrong and probably has no way of knowing (see below)... i knew the owner (coach wally knapp from nathan hale) and his hired help all were from hale... hell, i'm pretty sure that coach knapp and his wife even traveled to the original shop in muscatine, ia... that store was most certainly an authentic maid rite franchise...
wiki:
"Angell was a butcher in Muscatine, Iowa, who combined a special cut and grind of meat with a selected set of spices and created the Maid-Rite sandwich, which is not a traditional hamburger. Rather, it is called a "loose meat" sandwich. While the component meat is similar, the Maid-Rite sandwich's meat is not formed into a patty, making it similar to a sloppy joe only without the tomato-based sauce. After a customer sampled the food, the customer exclaimed that the sandwich was "made right." Angell modified the "made" to "maid," reflecting the wholesomeness of the sandwich.
Angell opened his first restaurant in Muscatine, which was a walk-up restaurant. Later, a new eat-in building was opened. Along with his son Francis Angell, a second restaurant was opened that featured a "car hop" or drive-in service. This was the first such service of this kind in the United States, with A&W Restaurants and White Castle Restaurants following this type of service shortly thereafter.
The first franchise was opened in Durant, Iowa, which still maintains a Maid-Rite restaurant. Maid-Rite began to grow in the number of franchises throughout the United States under the direction of William Angell, the grandson of the founder. The Angell family would have controlling interest in the franchise until 1984, when it was sold to a partnership of Clayton Blue, a farmer from Russell, Iowa, and John Gillotti, a contractor from Des Moines. (The original Maid-Rite restaurants in Muscatine were sold to Gary Kopf, a local businessman who also operated vending companies, family restaurants and bakeries.) Blue had plans to expand the chain into a worldwide operation and sell stock to the public; however, after Blue defaulted on the contract to buy Maid-Rite, Gillotti purchased the chain outright in 1988. Gillotti died in 1991, prompting a legal battle between Blue's family and Gillotti's heirs over ownership of the chain. After an injunction was issued by the Polk County District Court in 1992 that prohibited any new Maid-Rite franchises, the Gillotti family was awarded ownership of the 138-store chain in 1995. However, issues with franchise fees and product quality led to a number of restaurants closing; by 2002 the number of Maid-Rite stores had dropped to 83.[1]
In 2002, an investor group led by former Des Moines banker Bradley Burt purchased a majority interest in the Maid-Rite chain, with the Gillotti family retaining an interest. While up to 20 longtime franchisees left Maid-Rite during the first two years of its new ownership, Maid-Rite began to use computerized systems to control expenses, started offering ten-day courses on how to prepare Maid-Rite food to new franchise owners, and created a new uniform decor for its restaurants that retains the nostalgia of the Maid-Rite brand. According to the Des Moines Register, Maid-Rite has a ten-year plan to open more than 1,000 restaurants throughout the United States.[2]"
They had a Maid-Rite at 91st and Sheridan where the tag agency is now. Kinda scary to hear about two different meat trays...but I always loved the loose meat hamburgers there. Guess I'm glad I never used a coupon.
I'd love for Krystal's Hamburgers (the deep south's answer to White Castle) to come into town.

MAID-RITE COMMERCIAL
i'd question your recollection of what you saw/heard in the knapp's maid-rite... he and his family were owner/operators and put everything they had into that store, they were very proud of it...
the only time i saw two different piles of meat on the grill was when one was cooked and ready to go out and the other was still cooking... i do know that a couple of times coach changed one meat pile to be "spicier" and when he made one that was actual "sloppy joes" per customer requests... they never had two different quality meats... i mean, it was all ground whatever anyway and not advertised as "ground angus" or any other highline meat... so, if it was all just ground something, how much could you save by going with a lesser quality ground meat?
hell, you might have just heard someone getting ripped for trying to serve meat that was not even ready yet...
and yes, i was always there and actually kind of worked there for awhile...
Mi Cocina, it's not a chain, although they have several locations here and one in KC. Very good Mexican, but with a lot of non typical dishes.
Hook, Line & Sinker on Lemon in Dallas near McKinney Ave.
Not a chain but its a busy place in Dallas.
Mostly fried fish, spicy shrimp cocktails, very simple stuff. Order at a counter a la White River. However its very small, maybe was an old gas station?
I ate at Taylor's Maid Rite in Marshaltown back in the 90s when I made my pilgrimage to the Mecca of IMCAdom. It was a nice novelty but if it was all that great there would be McDonald's Maid Rites all over the country.
Back then you could race 5 nights a week up there and not pull over 100 miles.

I put a lot of thought into this...A co-worker at the time (from Iowa) liked to go there and talked about it a lot, so I may have heard it from her. I also read the review in the newspaper at the time and it may have come from that review. I do remember hearing it from one source or the other. I would use coupons when I went in there, but quit going there after I learned what happened.
I would love to have a really good independent full service Greek restaurant.
If you liked Hook Line and Sinker Try Aw Shucks on Lower Greenville. Total hole in the wall but best fried shrimp I've ever eaten...and I don't even like fried shrimp.
I would like El Pollo Loco to open a few places in Tulsa. Everytime I go to SoCal on business and have the chance, I go by an El Pollo Loco and get something to eat.
Basically it's chargrilled chicken in a fast food setting and I find it very tasty.
