Title: Miss Teen South Carolina
Post by: jiminy on August 25, 2007, 12:44:04 pm
Anybody else see this last night?

Youtube link (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQdhMSEqhfg")

The knowing look on Slater's face at the end is priceless.  The thing is, was this a red herring question?  No way do I believe that 20% of Americans can't find the US on a world map.

Did she win?

ehh... no.  She did beat out West Virginia for 3rd runnerup though.  Probably was the frontrunner before the fatal question.

If you turn the volume all the way down, she does a fine job.

It reminds me of when Brittany Spears was a teen sensation. Her songs were great, we just always had the word "mute" on the screen.

Wow, and she wasn't even representing Oklahoma.

Hopefully the South Africans can buy Iraq maps for the rest of the U.S.

Well, you know she could be from the coastal part of South Carolina, and if the pageant was at altitude she may have been feeling the effects of oxygen deprivation.

...or she's really blond.

Really REALLY blond.  On the positive(?) side, she will be go down in history as the first person ever to end a sentence with the four words "everywhere like such as."

Usually if I see something like this posted I ignore it, but not this time.  That was hilarious.  Thank you.

I'll try my translation skills that I have been working on lately:

People in America can not find their own country on a map because some Americans do not have maps.  We should help people in South Africa and Iraq, as well as other Asian countries, so we can make our position better.  [smile]

FAIL

Wow, just wow.  I presume, ahh never mind.  I was going to try and figure out the talking points she was trying to work in but its damn hard to connect South Africa with Iraq in any meaningful way.  Let alone what either of those countries have to do with Americans finding the US of A on a map.

She'll probably be giving her next speech on a brass pole.  And the world will be better off for it.

I've watched it 20 times and could keep watching it. I keep thinking of the watch party in South Carolina with friends and family huddled around the TV only to go from cheering to utterly speechless.

Well, South Carolina, they probably agreed with her.

I agree sgrizzle, I've watched it many times and it never fails to make me laugh out loud.  The ending just really seals the deal, with the zoom-out to Slater showing him using all his powers of concentration to keep from laughing, then his low subtle "Thank you miss South Carolina" as he backs away with that grin, while she is standing there with her hands on her hips and that million dollar smile, like she just nailed it. Truly a moment to treasure.

Well, I hope this helps the poor li'l gal:

On KFAQ, Mudlock played a clip of her Today Show appearance this morning: she and all of her friends know where America is on the map.

I'm glad that's settled.

You guys all sound like she's all grown up and not a young teenager standing in front of 1000's and have millions watching her during that statement.

I'm sure you all could of done a better job at that age being properly responsive to the question in front of millions of viewers...... am I right?

Or is it some insecurity issue you are all dealing with trying to trash a beautiful young lady?

Whatever your reasons are for trashing her, obviously it is a reflection of who you are....am I right?

It's not a one time fear thing. She said after the contest she was going home to "eats me some hamburgers" and that she didn't know what the question meant. Yeah she got nervous and made it worse but she had it wrong to start with.

If I ever make it on TV (which I hope doesn't happen) I fully expect to be critiqued and ridiculed thoroughly.

Oh well, then should we start the bashing of gays and blacks? Or is it ok for a bunch of middle age men to be bashing teenage girls?

Anyone want to put down a black person or a gay person, or should we just keep it to a young teenage girl that will be hurt for life over this experience that you middle age men feel right in hammering on?

I mean really, what the heck gives???????

Why do any of you feel enjoyment or humor in putting down someone like this? She was a normal child with a thought of bettering herself but now the middle age men of America decide she's fair game in destroying her life, I just don't get it but then I'm not ate up with self denial.

How many of you guys bashing this young lady have daughters? I doubt any of you and if you do........well, it would suck to have you as a Dad. What a load of crap........

jeez, pull yourself together guy, nobody is wishing the girl ill will or anything, we just think the clip is hilarious.  As noted, her life is not going to be destroyed or even harmed in any way, in fact she has been on the Today show and I believe Letterman, so this was probably the best thing to happen to her.  If Jessica Simpson can do it, so can she.

No problem then, you want to be the first person to rip off some humor at a gay or black person?

edited to add: Just because she was strong enough to go on Letterman and redeem herself, do you feel any better about yourself if she wasn't able to do this and was destroyed for life by the so called humorous attacks on her?

I caught a few suggested answers to the question on KFAQ today.  The best answer I heard was something like this:

The reason why 20% of Americans can't find the United States on a map is because they are spending their time watching superficial TV programs such as this pageant instead of looking at maps of the world.

That's my paraphrase.

Title: Miss Teen South Carolina
Post by: jiminy on August 28, 2007, 09:03:46 pm
I tried to find the survey that says this, and there is none.  The closest I could find was a National Geographic survey that said that 6% of 18-24 year old Americans couldn't find the US on a world map.  That's a far cry from 20%.  I think the judge or whoever prepared the questions is the one that bungled things up.  Maybe they saw 5% and somehow interpreted that as one-fifth.
Porky, it seems you are looking for a cause, and there really isn't one here.

On the other hand, Porky, if you had just come from viewing the Youtube video and had read the comments people left there, then yeah, I was disturbed by a lot of them too.  It's scary how dark and evil the minds of people hiding behind internet anonymity can be.

.....and you wonder why they refer to us as showvenist. No cause here jiminy, just respect to those that warrant it, obviously something that you will never be able to obtain.

It's sad that we live in a time when someone wants to respect their fellow person it's referred to as having a cause.

This is primarily a beauty contest.  Miss Teen South Carolina set herself up for ridicule by voluntarily entering the contest.

I got a chuckle out of her ditsy response.  I have no qualms laughing at someone who, if she plays her cards right, could likely be far richer by her mid-20s than this U.S. American ever will be (like such as).  If she can laugh at herself, then she could have a very "bright" future.

Toss, toss.

Porky,

I will happily make fun of any gay person or black person that goes on national TV to say "Look at me, look at me because I'm a perfect model of what a teenage girl (gay/black) should be.  Everyone, look at me!"

When you stand up and shout "look at me" and then make a complete donkey of yourself, the world will make fun of you.  And rightly so.  That way, I can point to her and say to my daughter - "honey, don't be like her."

I do not make fun of random teenage girls, I do not make fun of random black people, nor random gay people.  The situation is not analogous.  She threw herself into the public spotlight for her own gain, and then made made herself sound like an idiot.  SHE threw herself in the spotlight and SHE made herself out to be an idiot.

and for the record, I'm not middle aged.  You're not middle aged until 50.  That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.

Well I must be wrong, since everyone seems to be saying basically the same thing.

So I guess it's okay to start making fun of people making fools of themselves like Senator Rump Ranger Craig for yanking on the wrong leg in the restroom at the Minneapolis Airport. Or we can make jokes about that fool Ray Nagin for drowning his own people because he thought they would all float. But they wouldn't be near the fun to bash as some female teenager trying to better herself, would it?

So Porky, when would it be OK to make fun of someone?  If not when someone goes on TV to prove how cool they are and utters such things, then when?

and you're not wrong.  Its just an opinion.

So why not post that?  Why single this out as a great travesty to make fun of a poor little teenage girl?  Why are you not all over AOX every time he jabs GW, or IP when he goes off on Hillary, or the constant jabs at Paris Hilton et al?  You did not chime in on this subject until now, so apparently you either just acquired this ethos or for some reason only felt the need to enforce it now.

Being made fun of can serve a useful societal purpose in sending a message.  The stinky kid at school learns about deodorant, the over confident are cut down to size, and the "I think I'm cool" pageant queen learns that the spotlight is not always lime.  Not too mention the entertainment and stress relief values of comedy in general.

But your position is duly noted.

Glad I could help.

I also feel obligated to point out that Miss Game Cock is now attending school at Appalachian State University in West Virginia.  App state - as in we just beat Michigan in the Big House App state.

To clarify for non-football fans.  Michigan is MICHIGAN.  One of the top 20 football programs ever.  They were ranked #5 in the nation.  They play in front of an average crowd of 110,000 people.

App State is literally not in the same division.  They play in from of an average crowd of 10,000 people (100,000 less).  Las Vegas did not even give this game a line, you could not bet on it because it was so one sided.  Yet App State won.  Rock over London, Rock on Chicago (major props if anyone gets that reference without Google).

It would be like Roger's State beating OU.  Michigan has been playing football since 1881 and has NEVER lost a home opener to an unranked opponent and never lost to someone in a lower division.  O-V-E-R R-A-T-E-D!

Welcome to 6 degrees of Miss Game cock.
