There's a new section on the World's Web site where you can submit your suggestions for an opening act for the BOK Center in 2008: www.tulsaworld.com/bokcenter
Garth Brooks!
Stones.....
Clapton, with a whole bunch of his Tulsa musician friends.
Here is a link to the top fifty acts in America.
http://www.pollstar.com/news/top50.pl
The number one act is a disney TV star who is also Billy Ray Cyrus' daughter.
My top choice isn't in the top fifty...Madonna.

Yes, and as I remember SMC promised the stones would come to tulsa. how about picking something they didn't promise.
say what you will about the Stones now but that looks real good to these eyes, Can't wait to see it up on the big screen

I'm betting on the mesiah.

They should consider that their grand finale.
Maybe It's just because I've always sided with aerosmith over the stones.

Yeah, that seems to be a bigger partisan line than repub/demo.
I dig both the Stones and Aerosmith. So call me bipartisan. [;)]
Now, the big music divide has always been between Stones fans and Beatles fans. I always liked blues, so the Stones get the nod in my brain.
My favorite bands of the moment are Living Things, Earl Greyhound, and the Drive-By Truckers. All of them could wipe the floor with those geezers.
Try Michael Franti and Spearhead....music with a message. Hard to come by anymore. Try Yell Fire!
But don't look for him in the arena. Look for truck pulls and rodeos. And if we're lucky the messiah. More likely Mabee Center for that....
Pearl Jam

Hey Mr Uber Cynic, here's a quote from Michael Franti for you:
"We are living in an era of cynicism. One thing that kills cynicism for me is a healthy dose of fun."
You need some fun.
Swake, The master of google strikes again.
Thank you for taking the time to research Franti.
And I will play the skeptic over the cynic anyday.
BTW, I ain't never had too much fun.....
I'm a little surprised the folks bringing us this arena haven't been promoting a Beatles reunion for the opening act.
I am headed to see the Fab Faux in a couple of weeks and will let you know if they are in the running.
However, they are not the ressurection...
I can't believe I am reading about all these people that had nothing to do with the Tulsa music scene..[}:)]
Leon....and JJ Cale....!

Blues
Rock (classic)
Southern Rock
Tulsa Sound
All in one night!
The only way they'll know is if you vote: www.tulsaworld.com/bokcenter
Flaming Lips opening for the Chili Peppers.
OU - OSU basketball (I know it can not happen because the schedule is set but..)
or anything else I would want to go to.

Looking pretty thin on arena talent......
Howie has been putting together some great shows at the OKC zoo amp this summer...
The arena will probably be slightly behind schedule for opening (aren't all construction projects always behind schedule)?
That means that the first event could be a fancy gala for president-elect Hillary.
I just thought of an interesting idea while painting the garage. Bear with me.
Let the arena book George Strait, with Asleep at the Wheel as his backing band.
Pluses:
-- Strait can fill any arena you can name. So booking him would definitely be profitable.
-- Strait loves Western swing, and so does Tulsa, which leads to ...
-- ... Asleep at the Wheel, which can provide the Bob Wills thing and Strait can do the Tommy Duncan thing.
Lest you think this is a crazy idea, Asleep at the Wheel has been doing a tour as the backing band for Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Ray Price. They not only did Western swing tunes, but the other hit singles by the singers. AATW is a versatile band. I can attest. The version of Willie's "Always on My Mind" was sublime.
Let's make this a big one-time thing, like when Bing Crosby occasionally sang with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, simply because he liked the band and the rhythms (and their schedules crosses paths, of course).
Strait could devote one-third to half the concert to Bob Wills tunes and the rest to his hits. It'd be a celebration of Western swing, country music and Tulsa. I think Strait -- and the audience -- would get a huge kick out of it.
lol, then all we have to do is find 18,000 Oklahoman's who voted for her. [;)] I don't want to turn this into a political thread, but I couldn't resist that one.

huh? a theoretical, wish-list rambling of a bunch of forum-monkeys has you convinced that the arena opening will be thin on talent?
for ****s sake, the arena opener might be a ****ty act but you won't know it now and certainly not here...
touring schedules are rarely booked more than 9 months out...
the opening act will most likely have to do with who is out on a national tour pushing an album and what acts happen to be in/near the midwest than anyone's personal wishes...
barring some darkhouse (i.e. garth) popping up for a one night only or readily available local standards (i.e. leon)...
if memory serves, the grand opening for the ford arena included a choir and a bunch of "talented" local musicians...

That's a great idea. Strait performed on Asleep at the Wheel's first Bob Wills tribute album.
Reba performed on the second tribute album -- she'd be a big draw, too, I'd think.
(Your Clapton/"Tulsa sound" idea was a good one, too.)
Alas, I suspect that those in charge would regard a western swing opener as "too blue collar" for Tulsa's sophisticated image.
I'd rather hear AATW at Cain's anyway.
I'm sure I'll be moved back in the Tulsa area by the time this arena is finished being built, so here's my ideas.
Christina Aguilera
Justin Timberlake
Snoop Dogg
Eric Clapton
Genesis (I heard they were having a reunion tour)
And I hope to see you there!

Ahem....did I ever say my friend saw Stevie Wonder at the OKC Zoo Amp?
I have been to some tremendous shows there and will withhold throwing about counter intelligence hoping you are either going to a "meeting" or headed for the meds.
I really do not care who opens the arena. Tulsa audiences for the most part are lame outs. I shy away from the crowds here. Too many butt holes.
I like the idea of the Tulsa sound with Eric Clapton. Throw in Leon Russell & JJ Cale, and I'd pay a LOTTT of money.
DMB, Pearl Jam, or the Clapton/Cale shows alllll sound like excellent picks to me.

"withhold throwing about counter intelligence hoping you are either going to a "meeting" or headed for the meds"??...
please don't hold back...
are you going to send me more PMs calling me a "chicken****" and physically threatening me just like you did last year?
did i ever say your were confused about
him being at the zoo amp? i was inferring that you were confused about it being "very good"...
since you don't care, why post in this thread? but you have to, you can't help it...
you're a habitual contrarian and make outlandish generalizations...
anyone who thinks okc crowds (especially at that neglected, ****hole amp) are less "lame" or more "butt hole" free than a tulsa show, especially the cains, is delusional...
i was backstage for an amazing performance at the amp this summer watching the first 10 feet of people dance and sing while the rest of the hillside sat firmly parked on there fat asses...
between the ambivalent crowd, the "luxurious" mobile homes and the overly aggressive ex-biker "security" the band was not happy...
you never explained how any rational person could make the logical leap that the the arena will be "thin on talent" from reading this thread...

The arena will be thin on talent because of the death of the super star. The talent pool has gotten quite large while the fans for any single star have been spread thin. The internet is a wonderful thing. In some ways, it has become our undoing. Just ask Elton John...
Plain and simple.

Was a big Dave Matthews fan in the 90s but kinda lost track of them the past few years, except for the time when their tour bus dropped a buncha crap (literally) on unsuspecting tourists taking a boat tour on the Chicago River.
Okay. Can't resist.
Hmmm.... just so you know... Dave Matthews Band kicked off their 2007 US summer tour July 8 at one of those "soccer-only" stadiums at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL... [:D]

Clapton finally came out on stage again during "the country segment," joining Gill, Lee & Crow for "Living on Tulsa Time."(http://billboard.blogs.com/mobile_beat/images/2007/08/03/0728071809b.jpg)
I have seen DMB every year since 1998. My wife always buys tix for me for my birthday...They get mildly annoying during election years, but other than that they have only improved with time...though I'm still praying for Leroy Moore to have some type of accident that keeps him from playing the sax, if that's what you call what he does the sax as "playing it." [;)]
I wouldn't mind Clapton, but he's been on this kick for quite some time where he just won't play any of his old standards. I have friends who have seen him several times in the last few years, and every time without fail it's the same complaint. "He wouldn't play anything I knew..."
I can sympathize with Clapton, and as a former musician (still pretending to be one every once and a while), I can understand the "Play sum Skynard" mentality that I'm sure he gets tired of, but Clapton seems to be consistently filling up his set lists with obscure blues tunes...I don't know how long he can keep doing that and drawing crowds.
Ted Nugent would do quite well and lots of stick people would come.
He could open for Kenny Chesney
Facing a draft, Nugent bravely wet his pants

Led Zepelin is reuniting....
doesn't matter.... I won't go unless Spearhead opens
Lets try to do some creative, outside the box, thinking here.
Perhaps not AN opening act, but a series of acts.
Perhaps have a series of concerts, kind of like D-fest. Make it a national or international draw. The Greats of Jazz and the Blues from around the world. Disco Fever anyone? Something thats not just a concert, but an event.
Perhaps start some sort of contest and award 5 million dollars in prizes, or simply bragging rights. There is a "Eurovision", is there an american counterpart where each state sends a contestant? If not, lets do that, if they have one for the US, lets do a global contest. Best new musical group... on earth. Or a Continental, Battle of the Bands.
We often holler that we cant get the big groups or events here. But things like D-Fest and Tulsa Tough have shown that we are perfectly capable of creating something unique and making it great. Who needs to "bring it in" when we can make our own. That is what will really make Tulsa attractive and stand out anyway. Constantly trying to pull in the same ol crap everyone else gets sounds kind of lame in comparison.
What other annual or bi annual event do you think we could come up with that could become a draw? A new event? Something that puts Tulsa on the map?
Perhaps we could get one of these "blow your sock off...!" acts..... (//%22http://www.typros.org/events.asp?id=11&eventsid=626%22)
they are probably already booked...
Why not something different that would appeal to the whole family, like Cirque du Soleil?

Three day opening each day featuring a different genre....or segment of the entertainment industry....
Cirque de Sole?
Country?
Soul?
Jam Band?
I think the artist has something here....I just returned from a premium 4 day event which would be hard to duplicate here. The budget was $6,000,000. They sold $7,000,000 in tickets and concessions. The profit went towards youth musical education programs...

We had a Cirque show come to town a few months ago at the Brady. I felt horrible for the troop because of how few people showed up. You could tell the show was a lot of work, and the people who were in it and running it were terrific. The little audience that did show up gave it their all in applause. People in the audience around me were commenting about how few people came out to support it. I can imagine that they wouldn't want to come back to Tulsa or definitely spread the word that Tulsa is not the place to go for that type of thing.
People complain about how there isn't anything neat like that to see in Tulsa. It was a great show, but hardly anyone showed up. I honestly felt sad and embarrassed.

But there are still several jam bands who when coupled together would produce an 18,000 sell out.
Unfortunately, the music business is at an all time low and this reality makes it difficult to find the right mix of talent for critical mass.
That and the fact all the great performers are too tired to tour.
Country still rules....not to my liking.
Even 3 tremendous cw icons backed by Asleep at the Wheel could not sell out the Mabee. But Garth, Carrie, Vince, and Reba would. The next day do a tractor pull. And then a rodeo on the third day.
Over at the civic center have the world's largest gun show run concurrently...

A mix of musical acts that brings in different age groups, a line-up such as:

The White Stripes
It would sell a lot of tickets.

based on the tw today, we'd better be lining garth and clan up now... holy crap, 160,000 seats in 58 minutes... wow, unfreakinbelievable...
Then what?
this is the season of what now?
How many seats are we up to (or down to) now. Last I heard it was less than 20,000. Most of the events mentioned here require more seating to make ticket revenue.
Why would someone book a 15,000 arena when they have a choice of a 25,000+ seat arena just a couple of hours away and sell signifigantly more tickets within the same market?
Sorry to interject business into this. . . If I were Aerosmith, I'd go to OKC and make 20% to 30% more profit.
You may continue now.

I don't know how anyone could make 20%-30% more profit in OKC except for outrageous ticket prices. The Ford Center and the BOk Center are comparable in size...
Ford Center Capacity 19,599 (Basketball)
18,036 (Hockey)
17,868 (Football)
20,817 (Concerts)
BOk Center Capacity18,041

My apoligies I seem to have bad info on the OKC Arena, I was going off their original claims during design.
I am under the impression (from a fairly well informed loud-mouthed construction manager) that the seating had to be reduced to 16,800 to accommodate moving a wall 8 inches to for mechanical changes on the Northwest-upper-end side. This however is only rumor. But I am inclined to wait for the final count.
If the numbers are indeed lower than what was promised, I recommend a recount! . . .and then another. . .and another!
My apologies for posing incorrect figures.
Saw this on KTUL's website. Although I don't care about much of the story, the last line states that some annoucements are coming this week about opening acts and upcoming performers . . . . hmmmm, guess we'll get to find out.

the fact that you can't possibly guess what that means renders your opinion worthless...
i know phish, i've listened to phish...
"anyone with any knowledge on music knows that Phish is one of the most talented bands to ever play and one of the greatest live acts to ever tour."- that is a ridiculous statement...
so every few years they tour for a year and play rambling 4 hour medleys to stoned audiences who follow them around the country making money by selling cheese sandwiches in the parking lot... that makes them talented?
dude, don't bogart the pipe... jam bands are bull****.
Phish sounds nothing like the GD. The only similarity is that both are "jam bands" in concert that develop music as they tour and their fan base shares much common ground. The ambiance is much the same, but certainly not a knock-off. Is Johnny Cash just an Elvis rip off - they even play some of the same songs and both in baritone...
Four whole pages on this wishlist and no mention of U2 or the Eagles? The Eagles will be on tour too. Doubt either could happen though.
The only jam group I've found that's worth a damn is old-school -- the Allman Brothers Band.
Hint to jam bands -- it would help if your eight-minute songs would actually have *intensity.*
The nature of "jamming" is not intensity but ambiance. There is little skill in jamming out power chords with a rock beat over a cycling baseline for 8 minutes. Now fluttering between blues scales and intermixing beats while changing leads in a less "intense" jam is much more interesting. At least IMHO.
I'd be damn happy to see U2 in there. I'm thinking they are working on Garth Brooks. I hope they make it a REALLY big deal and do three shows in consecutive weeks, one for everyone: Flaming Lips opening for the Chili Peppers, Carry Underwood opening for Garth Brooks, and then something for the FOPS.

Have you ever seen Phish live?
In fact, have any of you doubters seen Phish live?
I saw Phish live about 12 years ago in Dallas. It was a good show.
I went to about twenty Grateful Dead shows and saw many similarities between the crowds, but the Dead was way, way better.

Why did you think the Grateful Dead was a better live show and what years did you see the Dead?

I saw my first show in summer of 1974 at the Boston Garden and my last show in 1995 at the football stadium in Las Vegas.
I went to all my shows in the 1970s while in college, but was in Vegas fifteen years later and just decided to go. It was in May and Jerry died in August.
My favorite show was in Tulsa at the fairgrounds Pavilion in 1979. They opened with my then favorite "Jack Straw". That night they played a jam version of the Buddy Holly song "Not Fade Away" that I hope I will never forget.
Phish is moot.. They aren't together anymore.
And besides, everyone loves Celine Dion.
Bring on Weezer!!

Nice! Did you see much of the legendary Spring '77 shows? How many shows did you end up seeing? Also, I bet that '95 show was hard to handle after seeing them in the 70's, but you had the Dave Matthews Band opening, huh? [}:)]

oh yes, lets tax our law enforcement to the limits by having to bust all the pot heads who will make their pilgrimage to see Phish.

Yes....They sucked what a bunch of droning.....
I watched the Economic Development meeting from the 6th. What a bunch of bull. Nobody has arena projections. And the man running the show looks just like any other promoter. Then Suzi Stewie comes on saying the economic benies to the city out weigh the losses on the arena functions. Looks like the old convention center will run bigger numbers than the areema.
