It really depends on your driving habits.  If you do most of your driving "start and stop" then the hybrid's your car.  If you drive mostly highway, then the hybrid is not your car.

I thought I had deleted this post since I thought it was in the wrong forum and posted it into the "forum chat".  Apparently it didnt get deleted.  I apologize for the double post.

I was looking at Diesels about a year ago, noticing some of them got really great mileage, and at that time, Diesel was 50 to 75 cents cheaper than Unleaded (I figured it just held more steady when Unleaded spiked) - Prices today have proven that theory wrong.  Diesel is running about 50 cents higher than Unleaded now.

Anyway, the cars that looked attractive to me at the time were Volkswagens using a 1.8 Liter Turbodiesel engine.  People on online forums were sharing their experiences of getting 60 to 100mpg with those things.  But the price of entry (and probably maintainance) was still high on those things, even when they were used with considerable mileage.  I'm sure a Beamer would be no different.

The highway mileage difference more than makes up for the extra cost of Diesel. I very nearly bought one of those Jetta TDIs back in 1999. I decided it was cheaper overall to keep driving my old beater Honda. Since then, I've spent less on gas and maintenance on that now 17 year old car that I spent less than $2000 to buy than I would have spent on the price of the Jetta alone.

Of course, it's pretty cosmetically embarassing at this point. :p
