Check that "beautiful stainless steel" exterior after a few years of Oklahoma weather and gang grafitti tags. Yes, it will look lovely! By the way, the "modern" design was NOT what was presented in the original renderings that were used to con voters into approving Vision 2025. Those drawings showed a brick art deco type building. Just another screw job by our "leaders".

Nope, because there was never a rendering put forth before the vote.  The vote was in 2003, Pelli was chosen in 2004.  If you're going spew forth, then research a little.  Or is researching more difficult out west?

There most certainly WAS an artists rendering of the new arena. It was before Pelli was chosen. Check back and you will see.

This is the only other rendering I could find:

(my apologies, someone on here did this originally, I don't remember who to give proper credit)

I have.  Link please.  Why didn't you link it in your reply?  Hmm...

There are no active links with that rendering but I'll bet somebody has a hard copy of the original proposal that they could scan.

Hoss, why are you so hostile toward somebody with a different opinion than your own?

Nothing personal. Everyone had an opinion and I respect yours as you should mine.

Nothing personal either.  I just dislike people who argue for the sake of arguing and then can't back anything up with fact.  FB should be the only one cornering that market.  [:O]

Breitee, there aren't any active links because a rendering never existed.  The County sent out RFPs after V2025 was passed and accepted design proposals from multiple firms.  A committee then narrowed it down and the selection committee chose Cesar Pelli.  That is when the first images of the design appeared.  No sooner.

Hoss wasn't hostile toward you in any way.  His wasn't opinion, either.  He was correcting a mis-statement made by you.  Opinions are opinions and should be regarded as such, but facts are facts.  Renderings and models were displayed after Pelli was chosen.  You may remember them looking like this:

quote:
The responses to the program manager and architectural/engineering requests were due Monday by 5 p.m. The committee will narrow the consulting firms to a maximum of five and conduct interviews in early December, and plan to make the final selection of a program manager by mid-December and an architectural consultant by mid- to late-January.

Mayor LaFortune also has finalized his selection of the Events Center Design Committee. They are Karen Keith, Mayor's office; Joan Seay, TulsaNow; Wayman Tisdale, Tisway Productions; Suzann Stewart, Tulsa Metro Chamber Convention and Visitor's Bureau; John Scott, Performing Arts Center & Maxwell Convention Center; Linda Frazier, Tulsa Arts Commission; Tulsa City Councilor Tom Baker; Ken Busby, Arts & Humanities Council; and Councilor Art Justis.

Tulsa County will sell bonds to be repaid by the sales tax revenues. The City will identify the financial need for engineering and design, and receive revenue from the County bonds to pay contractor invoices. The Tulsa City Council will appropriate the funds to the administration to enter contracts for design and construction.

Design committees for the various projects will share ideas for design with the City of Tulsa Project Oversight Committee. All final project plans approved by the Oversight Committee are also subject to Mayor LaFortune's approval.

VISION 2025 ARENA AND CONVENTION CENTER OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE SELECTS ARCHITECTS & ENGINEERS
The Vision 2025 Arena and Convention Center Oversight Committee has recommended to Mayor Bill LaFortune a local consortium headed by Matrix Architects for the design and overview of the construction of the new arena and renewal of the existing convention center. A Qualification Basis (QBS) procedure was used to bring an original submittal of 12 firms, which was narrowed to the final four – all of whom were interviewed over two days.

A press conference with Mayor LaFortune, Vision Builders, the oversight committee members and the arena and design committee members, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, east of the Maxwell Convention Center (between City Hall and the Convention Center) on the Plaza, weather permitting. (The conference will be moved inside the convention center if weather is unpleasant).

Joining Matrix were the other local firms of Wallace Engineering, Consynsus headed by Kathleen Page of the American Institute of Architects, Seismore, Weisz & Associates and Eslick Design. Odell Associates, a nationally significant design firm specializing in arenas and convention centers has agreed to join Matrix by opening a local office at 215 S. Denver. This combined office will function as an information office that will feature exhibits and work in progress.

Cesar Pelli, FAIA, one of the world's most honored architects, is the team's lead designer. Pelli, who is winner of the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal, the highest honor of all AIA awards. Pelli designed the world's tallest buildings, the twin tower/multi-use complex which includes a large convention center at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

"This combination, creating local jobs with world class design fulfills my continued commitment to the goals of Vision 2025, " said Mayor LaFortune.

quote:
Question:

Who selected the architect to design the arena and why did we not use a Tulsa firm?

Answer:

There was an extensive qualification process to select the best architectural team to design the new arena and upgrade the convention center. That process included review of written proposals submitted and interviews with the short-listed firms. A design committee and an oversight committee combined to form the interview committee in making the selection and, in total, consisted of over twenty (20) well-respected local leaders including elected officials, their representatives, and private sector leaders of specific expertise.

After much consideration, a shortlist of four firms was created. All four of those presented for the interview committee's consideration hybrid cooperative efforts inclusive of both local and out-of-state specialty or "star" designer components. After an extensive review, proposal analysis, and unscripted live interview before the committee, the Matrix / Cesar Pelli / Odell team was selected by the Mayor.

The team is led by Matrix Architects Engineers Planners, Inc., a Tulsa architecture firm established in 1984. They will be serving as Architect-of-Record, Project Management and Construction Administration. Also significant on the team are the firms, Cesar Pelli and Associates of New Haven, Connecticut as the Design Architect, and Odell Associates of Charlotte, North Carolina as the Arena Specialist. In addition, other Tulsa firms included on the team are Wallace Engineering, Consynsus, Sisemore, Weisz & Associates and Eslick Design.

quote:
If Tulsa doesn't build an events arena, another city in the region will, Vision 2025 supporters say, leaving area residents to continue going elsewhere for major concerts, gatherings and sporting events like the NCAA basketball tournament.

Proponents of the proposed $885 million incentives and improvements plan on Wednesday unveiled facts, figures and conceptual renderings for renovations to the current convention center and construction of a new 18,000-seat arena.

On Sept. 9, Tulsa County voters will consider a 1-cent county sales tax for 13 years to fund all or portions of the four-part Vision 2025 plan.

The convention center upgrades and arena carry a total price tag of $183 million. Proponents said the two facilities are crucial not only to boost sales tax revenues by bringing in visitors but to the revitalization of Tulsa's downtown as well.

The facilities would be linked by location and architecture and would create a needed downtown "synergy."

The PDF version of the story shows a conceptual rendering of the "events center." A bigger version, showing what look to be art deco details, appeared on the front page of the August 3, 2003, opinion section.

I don't wanna be a smartass, but it really doesn't make sense for there to have been an artist's rendering before Pelli was chosen.  Unless the artist was psychic.

Yes, but the fact remains is that this was conceptual and was done EVEN BEFORE THE VISION2025 VOTE PASSED.  That's why it's called 'Opinion'

Oh yeah, how could we forget.

Anyway, I sort of agree about the siding.  I hope there is some process that it still has to go through, because this sort of looks like something somebody could be sued over:

Reread the quote. The conceptual image was produced by the proponents of the Vision 2025 -- i.e., the vote yes campaign -- not by the Tulsa World editorial board.

Which is still a 'not take it to the bank' rendering.  People around here are acting like we knew what we were going to build before we had the funding mechanism in place.

Oh, but I forget I'm talking to one of the biggest opponents of the package.
