Actually, both are correct spellings in English. "Cancelled" is more often used in the UK, Canada and other English speaking locations, but it is also considered acceptable for use in America. US English favors a single 'l', thus "Canceled".

So, you can harp on the school all you want, but their spelling was, for all intents and purposes, correct.

I understand Roby.  But in any context where there are various alternatives to spelling a word 1) the most common usage is preferred and 2) a standard is required.  I realized that would be lost on many people so I just lowered my standard and edited my post.  Not really a big deal, just... well... disappointing.

It was actually quite interesting information to look up.

US English favors a single "l" over the double "l" favored by nearly every other English speaking country.

US English: canceled, traveled, traveling, traveler
UK English: cancelled, travelled, travelling, traveller

They also put junk "U's" in random words (ie. coloured).  Defence is a real word in Britain (Ministry of Defence).  Crazy buggers!

Incredible.  I was a TPS student from 1962 until 1975 and I only remember 1 time classes were cancelled, during the heavy late March snow storm of 1968 when we received about 10 inches of snow in 36 hours.  People today are such wimps about these things.

When I was in school and Larry Zinke was Superintendent...it seemed like every time it snowed enough to cover the ground he cancelled classes.

There was always thr rumor floating around that if HE couldn't get out or didn't want to in a snowstorm...that was good enough for him to cancel school.

Nevermind that the side streets are still terrible. They were at 11 p.m. Wednesday, anyway. And the slush was refreezing, to boot.

Yeah, and cars back in 1962 weighed about 2.5 tons as opposed to the barely 1 or 1.5 ton cars of today.  Plus, you were a damn sight safer in that old BelAir, I guarantee you that.  My first car to drive in was a 1971 Chevy Impala Coupe.  Might as well have called it 'Sherm', cause it handled like a tank.

Why didn't you just walk the ten miles to class, uphill both ways?
