Potential Buyer For North Tulsa's Grocery Store

Christmas may come early to north Tulsa with a new grocery store.

A potential buyer is interested in the old Albertson's site and a new store could be in place next month.

The store is located at the corner of Pine and Peoria and has been empty since Albertson's announced it was pulling out of Oklahoma more than a year ago.

We checked with several sources and no one is saying anything. What we do know is that the offer on the table is very serious and by Christmas, the plywood now covering the windows could be replaced by glass and the store could be open.

"I passed by the other day and it looks like there's some activity going on. I didn't know what."

And, it appears more serious than at least two other discussions on the property which include the grocery store and the acreage behind it. And, here's why.

"The proposal is a cash offer," says Tulsa Economic Development Chief Mike Bunney. "And, in this difficult credit market, a developer, potential owner with cash to spend gives a much higher level of credibility."

The city helped put together a marketing survey which proved the sites economic viability.

"The closest grocery store is three miles either way," says Andrea Murrell. "And, that's not good when you have a family. You never get to the grocery store when you need to get them."

"I miss it," adds Keisha Cato about the grocery store. "We need another grocery store and fast. They say it could be by Christmas. That's fast. That's pretty good."

The potential buyers are Tulsa investors. We also spoke with Tulsa City Councilor Jack Henderson who says even if this deal falls through, there is a back-up offer on the table.

On Thursday, the Tulsa Development Authority will be asked to work with the potential buyer and extend its timeline for developing a parcel of land behind the grocery store.

The last time there were too offers the "local investors" were hyped and never had any money while a national developer was ignored so I'm troubled by the fact this is another local investor. Hopefully it work out though.

And not trying to make stereotypes, but the previous store had theft issues and low sales (somewhat due to albertson's pricing) so residents of the area need to realize that it is their neighbors refusing to shop the store and/or robbing it that make it hard for a grocery store to survive. They need to shop whatever store moves in on a regular basis and if they must, the ne'er-do-wells need to get in a car, take a bus or ride a bike and take their mischief to South Tulsa instead of hindering their own community.

oh that's just ****ing great....your suggestion that the hoodlums should go violate another part of town instead of their own so their neighborhood can have a grocery store....in that case save the rest of us some hassle and post directions to your house at the store....IF it ever happens.

I hope it happens this time. Pine and Peoria is a short hop on 75 for downtowners.

Absolutely agree Grizz. Those folks out there are all doing well, they can afford to subsidize some theft now and then. What's the bus route from the hoodlum hoods to the cake eaters at 106th?

Target opening date October 2009.  I'll be impressed if that's met.

considering the last time I drove by there ground had not even broke and the leveling job that has to be done on that parcel will take a few months.

and rumor has it that despite target buying the land the store sits on, they are looking at reevaluating their real estate portfolio.

this, in light of the fact that they are sucking it up (5 straight down quarters)  people are quickly figuring out they don't need frou frou stuff in a sour economy.

take this and throw in the fact that Memorial crossing will be finished first and Regal plaza is already having problems finding tenants...target may be going OH **** and just scrap the whoel deal.

So I guess sgrizzle's invited thugs will have to settle with capping each other over at the 71st/sheridan reasors.

Absolutely. Stealing from the rich is way more fun than stealing from the poor.

Also, you could maybe send them to Whole Foods to steal from the pretentious snobby liberal elitist class as well as the right wing ultra conservative holier than thou south tulsa surburbanite.

Just keep them out of my neighborhood.
