The beautiful weather this weekend had several Kids groups out raising funds for their various activities.  I love this time of year, because If I'm going to spend $10 on a car wash anyway, I'd rather the money go to a good cause than a gas station. I'll buy cookies, candy, and even stuff I don't want if the kids do a good job of selling it and representing their organization.

I also like to see kids learning that hard work makes money.  If they are enthusiastic and do a good job I give them even more.  You can tell the kids that are going to be successful in life, they learn how to sell their product and take pride in the process.

Well. . . This weekend I saw several such groups and got really pissed off!  First of them was a Union group that had half-heartedly set up a wash at the entrance of Sam's on Mingo.  The girls had canisters and buckets out by the street that said "Donations."  They weren't encouraging people to get their cars washed, instead they were encouraging motorists to drop a couple of dollars in their buckets as they stopped at the intersections.  They were literally competing with the guys with the "Anything Helps" signs.  It was disgraceful and I intended to address it with some folks I know at Union.

The second was a little league team at a QuickTrip.  No wash, nothing.  . .Just hitting up customers for spare change.  It blew my mind to see two such groups on the same day just panhandling.

The third, and the straw that broke the camel's back, was a sports team at an intersection in Sand Springs panhandling.  Kids with card-board signs that said "Donations," and their hats outstretched to motorists.

How could any responsible children's group accept panhandling as a form of fundraising?  I would love to see some fine Tulsa reporter do a story on this and make it a spectacle.  I would also like to see the organizers of these activities learn that this is not how you encourage responsibility.

Speaking of pan handlers (please no jokes about nurses) I seen one for months standing across from Burger King at 161st and Adm. the guy has a silver Chevy S-10 pick-up and parks it there, he opens the hood and has a gas can out front and his sign reads "Stranded, out of gas please help". I know he's been doing that for at least the 5 months I seen him out there.  :(

I know i always make sure to open my hood when I run out of gas so I can check my gas gauge.
