I used him last year and my yard still looks like it.  Just like in the movie, I still have moles.

Westinghouse used something like this at their former industrial transformer site in Trafford, Pennsylvania.  It's long gone now.  My cousin and I went fishing at a small pond near the facility in the evenings.  I think the engineers delighted in firing that thing off when a bunch of kids were nearby.  We'd hear a snap, then an immediate thunder clap.  We just about jumped out of our skins!

Now, this was long ago, so I can't really say what the thing did, but I suspect it had something to do with testing the ability of transformers to pass a high-energy voltage spike to ground without doing any damage.  Lightning doesn't have to hit a line to induce a spike.  Just being nearby is enough.  I think if it arced inside a transformer, it would eventually overheat and burn.
