From Wikipedia:

Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday in 1887. By the time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day.[2] Following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland reconciled with Reyes[clarification needed], leader of the labor movement. Fearing further conflict, the United States Congress unanimously voted to approve rush legislation that made Labor Day a national holiday; Cleveland signed it into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.[4] The September date originally chosen by the CLU of New York and observed by many of the nation's trade unions for the past several years was selected rather than the more widespread International Workers' Day because Cleveland was concerned that observance of the latter would be associated with the nascent Communist, Syndicalist and Anarchist movements that, though distinct from one another, had rallied to commemorate the Haymarket Affair in International Workers' Day

Wouldn't want anyone thinkin' us workers are a bunch of Communist anti-social anarchists from Kenya or anything.

Yes, I know it's not good form to reply to one's own post.  It's much like talking to yourself.  Not that I'd do that.  Not me.

But I blundered across this after making the post above and it's too much of a hoot to pass up.  As most of you know, the city of Owasso has had a series of banners expressing the concept of the month, all of them character traits in keeping with the "city of character" theme.  Some would argue it's a city of characters, but let's not go there just yet.

Anyway, this was on the city gov facebook page and it's in keeping with the socialist spirit expressed above:

Where do your City of Character words of the month come from??? I have four dictionaries and "Maintaining a good attitude, even when faced with unpleasant conditions" is NOT the definition in any of them for Joyfulness? Who is spinning the Socialist twist on these words?

I'm going to dig out my copy of the socialist dictionary to look that one up.

Salutations' on this day to the vanishing working poor.

Had to replace the capacitor on the AC unit.  American made $29,00. China made $8.00 warehouse price.   OK though because America doesn't pay China anyway.
Today we stand in ecstasy and view that we build today'
Tomorrow we will enter into the plea to have it torn away.

You should purchase a second one as a spare.  According to two friends who do AC work, the Chinese caps simply don't last very long.  Capacitors have a finite life span, and reputable manufacturers can approximate how long a cap will last in regular service.  All capacitor dielectrics have some circuit pathways.  They are not perfect insulators. Eventually those pathways will conduct more and more current, producing gas inside the cap and causing it to fail.  The end or the body will bulge when that happens.  Some are constructed with a safety device that interrupts the main circuit connection when the out gassing occurs.

Thanks for the information.  I felt like a criminal buying two of them but when the air temp exceed 100 degrees and the run capacitor at rest equals that temp it is very vulnerable for insulation breakdown whereas it is easy to replace one on hand.
There is a problem on the horizon when the working poor must compete with the over population of the mid-east and east along with "Rosie the riveter" who did not return to the home after the war becoming in competition for jobs once held by the male species.  Thus we have entered into a service economy with production of material items produced by our design but by foreign labor.   Happy Labor Day created by corporate America dedicated to  the vanishing working poor.

According to Eric Cantor,  Labor Day is  as
QuoteToday, we celebrate those who have taken a risk, worked hard, built a business and earned their own success.
So I guess the new Labor Day is to celebrate the managers and business owners instead of the laborers who are the backbone of the United States of America.

Labor Day became a national holiday in 1894, after U.S. marshals killed two men in the ill fated Pullman Strike, a railroad workers' boycott against high rent and low pay. Government violence against the labor movement became a major political issue and "in the immediate wake of the strike, legislation was rushed unanimously through both houses of Congress, and the bill arrived on President [Grover] Cleveland's desk just six days after his troops had broken the Pullman strike." He signed the legislation "in an attempt to appease the nation's workers" but was not re-elected for a second term.

You should send it to Cantor. This current crop of Republicans is not keen on history. They didn't write it so I guess they don't trust it.

I had to replace the run capacitor AND the blower fan last weekend.  Guy at work had to replace the compressor/condensor fan cap on his unit.

If you can find a 600vac instead of the usual 377vac version, that can help the life some.  Harder to find, though.  Gotta love all this outsourcing...not!
