Plan for low water dam progressing

Jenks has been tapped as the leading candidate for a low-water dam, according to an official with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Arkansas River Corridor Study Project Manager Cynthia Kitchens said the research by C.H. Guersey and Co. supports the two top sites — Jenks and Sand Springs.
Kitchens, with the Corps of Engineers, said the firm has supplied six draft concepts, an ecological study, a hydraulics and hydrology study and two other concept reports. She said the biggest challenge is supporting the species native to the river and other resources.
"The Project Delivery Team has identified the site just below Highway 97 in Sand Springs and just below the Creek Expressway in Jenks as the top two potential dam locations," according to an article published in the Tulsa District Record of the Corp of Engineers.
"As such, they will be subject to more rigorous evaluation," the story said about the two sites. Kitchens said the corps is working on federal funding in the 2006 cycle.
