We have always been a nation of private interest, its that private interest that facilitates the of and for the people bit.  Why do you think the federal government assumed the debt load of the revolutionary war?  Certainly it served a small group of private individuals more than others... yet in the long run it served to unify the nation and stabilize the states.

While aiming to achieve our own goals, the nation grows stronger.

Pretending it hasnt always been so is ignoring quite a bit of history.
