Hometown

My mother always said it was her friends without children who were the most vocal of self appointed experts on child rearing.  I don't have children, so with apologies in advance I have this observation on today's child rearing.

We hold children to a completely different standard than the one my generation grew up with:

-- When we broke the law we went to juvenile court, now children are often tried as adults.
-- We drank legally when we were 18.  Today it's 21.
-- Our parents taught us values then expected us to make good judgments.  Today kids are subjected to testing of their bodies to ascertain what judgments they are making.
-- If we objected to that era's war, there was support for conscientious objectors.  Today if you oppose the war, you are alone and without any support.

We hold our children to a different and more demanding set of criteria than we were held to.  It strikes me as hypocritical.
