Why is VP Cheney in Afganistan?

There was a suicide bomber attack on the main gate where he was. He wasn't hurt, but was clearly the target.

Why is he in Afganistan?

Doesn't being there (and clearly a target) sound stupid?

Power is nothing till you use it.

I would think all the democrats would support it...

Do you think Cheney really was the target? Or did the suicide bomber just happen to strike the base on the day that he was there?

Then al-Qaida would say: "Yeah, that bomb was meant for Cheney. Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket."

Since there aren't that many suicide bombing in Afghanistan, it's a good possibility that was specifically targeted at Cheney.  It's not like Iraq, where suicide bombings are a daily happening.

Maybe. Except for the fact that suicide bombings were already on the rise in Afghanistan.

I read a report from the NATO-led ISAF that said there were 78 suicide bombings in Afghanistan in 2006 through early October. That's nearly two per week.

That's after 21 in 2005 and six in 2004.

I dunno, why did people expect President Bush to be in New Orleans within hours of Katrina?

Bush was in New Orleans after Katrina wasn't he?

I found out there were 138 suicide bombings in Afghanistan in 2006. That's well over two per week. Those types of bombings are way up, especially since the Taliban is fighting again.

I don't think the suicide bomber knew Cheney was there at all. He just happened to target coalition  forces at the base gate on a day in which Cheney happened to be there, a half-mile down the road and out of sight.

Well, let's put it this way: the suicide bomber definitely has no knowledge of Cheney's whereabouts now. [;)]

"The bomber, Accetta said, never tried to get by any U.S.-manned security checkpoints and instead walked into a group of Afghans outside the base and detonated himself.

"To characterize this as a direct attempt on the life of the vice president is absurd," Accetta said."

You have to read through the media propaganda bull.  This was nothing out of the ordinary bombings.
