"Lucio Benavides is familiar with the small neighborhood grocery store idea that Scott Smith is creating in the Crosbie Heights Neighborhood near downtown Tulsa.

"I grew up in Milwaukee's inner city where we had many little grocery stores run by mom and pops. I loved going in and buying a bag of candy for a dime," Benavides said.

Benavides, an artist, is helping Smith renovate a 900-square-foot building at 306 S. Phoenix Ave."

"The possibilities of a grocer returning to the former Albertsons in north Tulsa are rising.

Two grocery prospects are eyeing the former Albertsons store at Pine Street and Peoria Avenue: One is a group of Tulsans"

" City Economic Development Director Don Himelfarb said he had been in contact with Darrell Mitchell of St. Louis and a Tulsa group led by Marcus Howard."

" Although Howard won't release details, Himelfarb said he understands that the group has found someone who knows the grocery business and is going to work with them.

Davis said there are five principals in the group, all of whom are Booker T. Washington High School graduates.

Himelfarb said the group's focus, as they explained it, would be to create a store that addresses local needs as opposed to a cookie-cutter, chain store."

I hope the Booker T people have the best offer and get the old Albertsons Location. Would rather see a locally owned business and hope they do well.

Thanks for the good word AA.  Developments like this would make for a more interesting locale than a Wal-Mart!  Hope it comes together.
