Was watching TV the other night, flipping channels at random, I noticed the existence of a relatively new evangelist on the scene, one Pastor Melissa Scott, widow of the evangelist Dr. Gene Scott. Despite her alleged past career in porn films, she seems much more erudite than most on the televangelism scene. Has anyone seen this, and what's your take on it?

Her porn star name was Barbi Bridges...

Not that I have ever seen any of her movies...just been googling her...no, that doesn't sound right either...never mind.

Actually, I do find it a fascinating career switch if that's truly her background.

There is a lot of money to be made in televangelism, and apparently Barbi has seen this.  I guess her body ain't what it used to be so she finds more money in preaching than in porn.  Does she preach the "prosperity gospel" that is all the rage now and started with Oral Roberts?  (Plant your seed-faith gift and God will shower you with riches.  God wants you to be rich.)

All these televangelists are hucksters and I applaud the recent Congressional/IRS investigations of them.  They prey on the down and out and should be ashamed of themselves; most of them should be in prison.

There's no confirmation yet if she used to do porn, but I'm sure it will surface one way or another. She may not have her hand out for money and preach seed faith, but that's hardly a comfort for me. I'm not a religious man by any means, but the show does seem to be of some entertainment and educational value to pique my slight interest in it.

From what I get, her particular take on ministry is teaching religion from various scholarly sources in different languages, including Greek and Hebrew. The show often starts with the house band performing a number, and they do seem pretty good at what they do in terms of performance and style. And at the end, Melissa literally lets her hair down and does a song on her own; looks and a voice like that, she ought to be perfroming on the club circuit.

So it is not like what one is used to in televised religion-but let's be frank, it is still televised religion and should be investigated as such, along with all the rest of her colleagues. If it's perfectly legit, fine. If not, well, it's not the first time charlatans have taken to the airwaves.
