FLIP FLOP! He is now a spineless patsy for satan, er, I mean the Bush agenda.

Maverick Fails The Test: McCain Votes Against Waterboarding Ban
Today, the Senate brought the Intelligence Authorization Bill to the floor, containing a provision from Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) that establishes one interrogation standard, requiring the intelligence community to abide by the same standards as articulated in the Army Field Manual and banning waterboarding.

Just hours ago, the Senate voted in favor of the bill, 51-45.

Earlier today, ThinkProgress noted that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), a former prisoner of war, has spoken strongly in favor of implementing the Army Field Manual standard. When confronted today with the decision of whether to stick with his conscience or cave to the right wing, McCain chose to ditch his principles and instead vote to preserve waterboarding:
Mr. McCain, a former prisoner of war, has consistently voiced opposition to waterboarding and other methods that critics say is a form torture. But the Republicans, confident of a White House veto, did not mount the challenge. Mr. McCain voted "no" on Wednesday afternoon.

The New York Times Times notes that "the White House has long said Mr. Bush will veto the bill, saying it 'would prevent the president from taking the lawful actions necessary to protect Americans from attack in wartime.'"

After Bush vetoes the bill, McCain will again be confronted with a vote to either stand with President Bush or stand against torture. He indicated with his vote today where he will come down on that issue.

John McCain: He was against waterboarding before he was for it.

What was surprising to me was that it was so cavalierly mentioned by the "evil, corrupt, agenda driven, democratically biased" press. McCain blatantly threw red meat on the table for the general election. How easily he turned on his adamant opposition to waterboarding and torture. I was frankly quite surprised at what he will do to curry favor with conservatives.

You guys sure are serving red herring early in the morining.

To extrapolate McCain's vote on this bill as approving water boarding is a stretch.  Try reading a bill's contents first to find out what tiny sliver of the bill the Daily Progressive, Pravda, or whatever publication was cited before you jump to judgement.  That article would make it sound as if that was soley a waterboarding law.  Ever consider there might be a ton of pork or provisions that make no sense in it?

Here's the table of contents of this bill:

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?c110:5:./temp/~c110SO9FtT:e609:

It deals with CIA staffing, retirements, funding, procedures, etc.  Waterboarding was a wedge stuck in there by Feinstein.

Waterboarding became the "abortion" of 2007. First, with the AG confirmation hearings and now in the Presidential election.  How many AG candidates, Supreme Court Justices, and Presidential Candidates have been subjected to the "waterboard" test in the past.  This is an old method of torture.  The only thing new about it is it's become the red herring of the political year.

At least McCain had the balls to vote, Hillary and Obama were "NV".  Obama did vote on other issues the day before.

Doesn't look like Hillary's been at her day job in a couple of weeks.  Looks like Obama is at least starting to show up for work again after an extended leave dating to last July but he didn't have the balls to vote on this bill.

Consider that many Democrats have been approving deadly munitions for Iraq in many, many appropriations bills.  "We approve of deadly force, but please don't torture anyone."

Not a red herring....it's a flip flop. Not certain what species. Could be that our country has been lied to so much that everyone now thinks it's ok. Just look at Clemons...

Well written post. AOX's inbecilic clinging to a headline and not bothering to look at the substance of an issue is just par for the course. It's just easier that way.

AOX: Did you once again not even bother reading the article you posted? McCain explained why he voted the way he did. Lately, it seems every time you post soemthing, you sound more and more stupid. In the words of Ron White, "The next time you have a thought -- let it go."

Oh, and what say you about Obama's non-vote on the issue: "Vote for me, I'm afraid to take a stand.

That OLD article must have scared the terrorists. No terrorist attack on US soil since 9-11. Think this is due to our constitution being trampled?

What kind of a cowardly response is that? You are nothing but a pitiful little bomb thrower. You refuse to engage in debate, perhaps because you do not know how, opting instead to change the subject once you get smacked down with either facts or retort. You may want to try a different forum, big people are communicating over here.
