Above pictured is part of a pair of really obscure hotel designs proposed for Azerbaijan. Check out the links for different views of the "death star" and crescent hotels designed to act as a gateway to the capital city of Baku.

Azerbaijan?

Really?

Didn't they just lose a war to Armenia a few years back.  Aren't they a land locked former soviet block country with nothing going for them?  They don't have power most of the time.

I'm confused.

Heavenly Hospitality is probably behind it.  Don't worry, it'll never get built.

My support for Major League Soccer in Tulsa over the years has been based on quite a few different factors...

A)  Lamar Hunt was convinced that Tulsa could be to MLS what San Antonio and Portland have  been to the NBA...  http://www.tulsaworld.com/sports/article.aspx?articleID=020818_Sp_b1sittler

B)  Winnercomm was a gem of a Tulsa-based/locally owned company and they had some bigtime connections with ESPN, MLS and World Cup soccer doing production work... (the 2002 WC logo for ESPN was a creation of Winnercomm).

C)  Former Mayor LaFortune pushed through a feasability study requested by the league.  That study projected significantly higher numbers in fan support (14,600 fans per game in Tulsa versus 12k) and season tickets (projected at around 6100) compared to Kansas City's Johnson County feasability study done by the same group (Conventions, Sports & Leisure)...   http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?articleID=020911_Ne_a11priv

D)  Tulsa's 2003 MLS exhibition game drew over 14,000 fans, which was more than NBA exhibition games drew in the potential NBA and NHL expansion cities of Oklahoma City and Kansas City.  3500 Tulsa fans by game's end gave CC and checking info for season tickets... Tulsa's season ticket drive ended in May 2003 with about 5000 season ticket requests.

E)  In November 2005, the owners of DC United formed Global Development Partners and were part of a Tulsa plan for a TIF district to use 20 acres to build a stadium and an additional 40 acres for "mixed-use" urban density to complete a project for the East Village (East End).  These people had DC's Gallery Place TIF already on their resume... a Tulsa group was rumored to be pushing hard at MLS Cup 2005 in Frisco, TX for either an expansion team or the relocation of the Kansas City team to Skelly Stadium as soon as the 2006 season...

Where are we now?

A)  Lamar Hunt passed away in December, 2006.
B)  Winnercomm is no longer locally owned.
C)  LaFortune is no longer mayor and the feasability study is now 5 years old.
D)  Oklahoma City will get an NBA team, KC will likely get an NHL team to play at the new Sprint Center, while keeping their MLS team at a new TIF financed facility at the old Bannister Mall, while Tulsa has fallen off MLS's radar screen after the arrival of David and Victoria Beckham... in other words, MLS is "seeing other people."
E)  Global Development Partners backed out of the DC United deal in Jan 2006... backed out of Milwaukee's MLS group in Sept 2006 to concentrate on a minor league ballpark+mixed-use for Tulsa... backed out of a deal with the Drillers when they had trouble closing on certain downtown properties...

Baku is an oil city, kinda like Tulsa once was the "Oil Capital of the World" back in the day...    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUVhlSCpA84

As for getting a "chubby," that's the wrong pic... Rico's got a better one I can't find, so I guess this one will hafta do...
