A friend with whom I spoke days ago suggests-and I quote-reruns of Judy Garland's CBS TV show to be televised as part of its Festival 2008 programming. I told him that I didn't know if it would fly, as it's probably been nearly 40 years or more since those shows were initially aired.

Now if they aired complete, uninterrupted episodes of the old Garland TV show, that would cause me to set my VCR.  I have seen most all of her early-1960's TV shows in entirety or retrospective, and shoot, I was alive and probably watched it when they were originallly aired!!!  The Garland show aired at the same time as Bonanaza, and didn't stand a chance against the original competition.  Sad, as her show was first rate.

Well, of course she was first rate: she came from an era in Hollywood where there was a little more class, a little more respectability, and where the paparazzi and scandalmongers didn't have the cachet they had today.

Of course, my friend is a bit of a Garland fanatic, having so many of her recordings, and I don't know how many editions of this big concert she did at Carnegie Hall in the 1960s (I understand that it's supposedly like the greatest performance of her career), so I could see how he would be eager to see something like that.

Her big "comeback" show was the 1961 performance at Carnegie Hall in NYC.  I have this on vintage vinyl LP and reissue CD.  It is a wonderful concert.  The Capitol Records issue of this concert was the biggest selling LP for years, up until the advent of CD's.  And right now, I am going to put the Garland Carnegie Hall LP on my turntable, and enjoy some vintage, quality music.

I LOVE this song but it has been stuck in my head since the '70's special.

My familiarity of Garland besides Wizard of Oz and the movies she made with Mickey Rooney, is that she is Liza Minnelli's mother. But that friend of mine-I've known him since TJC- he's like, the ultimate historian of Judy Garland and other divas: they are something of a pantheon at which he has a tremendous affinity for.

That said, it does broaden my musical vista somewhat. I cannot thrive just on techno and 1980s music alone. And like Frank, Dean, Sammy and the rest, Judy would be a part of that great era.

I would like to get a copy of the "Discover Oklahoma" video that show not only the state but also the people of importance that are from Oklahoma to show some of my friends here in Arizona. (Hoyt Axton singing "Never Been To Spain" comes to mind) "In Oklahoma, not Arizona, what does it matter"

If someone could help me with this I would appreciate it.

"Discover Oklahoma" is produced by the Oklahoma Tourism Department, their website is www.travelok.com. They have info on getting copies of the show there.

My weekend Sunday ritual always includes watching the British Comedies at the end of the day. I like their, intelligent, relaxing, little bit bawdy, and quirky sense of humor. OETA is also where I discovered Dr Who when I was a kid. I also like the Friday Night Movie Roundup. Have found some great old classics that I would otherwise never have seen. And of course have always loved Masterpiece Theater and "Mystery" ever since I was a kid.

Hey, if it's Britcoms you like, how about Absolutely Fabulous? Makes our sitcoms look pale in comparison!

"Absolutely Fabulous" was shown on PBS stations all around the country about 15 years ago, EXCEPT OETA in Tulsa.  It was all the rage at the time, and I have often wondered why OETA has never shown this series.  Ditch the incessant reruns of "Are You Being Served" and show "Absolutely Fabulous."  Please!

The good news is that the OETA pledge drive comes to a close this evening at 10:00 PM.  We can finally get back to some quality PBS programming, at least until Augustfest starts.

At this point I am Doo-Wopped out.  I did enjoy the 60's, 70's and British hits specials, but it is a once a year thing.  I still am mad that KOOL 106.1 doesn't play alot of true oldies anymore, so I like hearing them and seeing the old performance videos.

Strangely, however, I've never caught Augustfest...is it more of the same?

What that show offered was honesty. Nothing sacred, nothing off-limits; whereas even our most daring sitcoms still have a ways to go.

I have never seen an episode of "Absolutely Fabulous," although I do know the characters of Patsy and Edina.  (forgive my spelling if I am wrong.)  I remember that special episode of "Roseanne" in the U.S. that they appeared on.  I would love to see the original series, and may one day spring for it on DVD, if that is my only option.

Oh, I agree wholeheartedly; if you still have a VCR, you may be able to score episodes of the show on VHS, which is where I happened to discover it first. Until then, click on the link to a youtube site with clips of the show that'll keep you in stitches.
