I was browsing though the Beryl Ford collection and noticed this picture of the Beacon Building at 4th and Boulder.  I never realized that it actually HAD a beacon on the roof!  Anybody know the history on this?

Built by Waite Phillips, the Beacon Building (1923) SW corner 4th and Boulder, is remembered by many Tulsans for a beacon light tower
(removed in 1976) that symbolized its long-time tenant, the Beacon Life Insurance Company and served as a aircraft navigational aid in the 1930's.

Bummer it was removed.

It was removed because it became structually unsound, the roof leaked around it and it was home to many, many pigeons who made a terrible mess up there. A real shame because it was a very distinctive feature downtown.

When I first saw the thread title I thought it said Bacon Building.

I was going to go find that damn building and chew on it for lunch tomorrow

Sorry to disappoint on the culinary front...

If it's any consolation, I'm pretty sure Bacon and Sons Used Furniture is still planning to move downtown sometime soon.... And Impressions makes a mean BLT sandwich...

I remember when they had to clear the building to get rid of PCB oil from the heating and cooling units.

I call it the PCBeacon building.
Power is nothing till you use it.
