State of the Ballpark (?)

You know, maybe they really should open the thing up to small donors!  The number of Tulsans willing to donate $100 toward a city-owned ballpark, built right in the Brady, is probably pretty high.  Now, that might not cover all of SemGroup's $7.5 million, but it would be a good start and likely to increase popular support for the plan, once more people had a stake in the sucker.  They could do one of those big bronze plaques listing all the donors, large and small.

I'll email the Mayor.

I was thinking the same thing. I've always liked the "Buy-a-Brick" programs because it gives people a sense of buy-in and the ability to point and show their contribution to the city.

Rumor has it that Tulsa is not getting the Micky Mantle Museum, OKC is.  Anyone heard about that?

The family of Mantle is talking to Bricktown and the Redhawks on the museum.

Oklahoma City wants it.  Oklahoma City will get it.  I'd say it's pretty well a forgone conclusion.  They can get their sh!t together to get get the population, businesses, city leaders and money behind a project and make it happen.  Tulsa has not shown it can do the same.

About Semgroup's donation, keep in mind that corporate donations are generally from the "so-and-so" foundation and not the daily cash flow of the company. Also keep in mind that bankruptcy as it applies to corporation means restructuring/protection and doesn't mean they're boarding up the windows.

This is probably right.  EDIT:  I actually don't think this is right at all.  I think this is a one-sided, poorly reported story that doesn't accurately convey the state of talks regarding the Mantle museum.  I think it's a story by a booster of downtown OKC trying to squelch internet rumors that Tulsa is getting the museum.  I'll point out two things about that story:

1) Steve Lackmeyer wrote the thing.  He also maintains a blog on downtown OKC for newsok.com and recently wrote a post urging the Redhawks to seize this opportunity.  http://blog.newsok.com/okccentral/2008/05/27/im-amazed/.   My guess is he saw some posts on OKCTalk regarding Tulsa's goal to get the thing (posted by, um, a regular poster of this board calling him out: http://www.okctalk.com/okc-metro-area-talk/13604-tulsa-wants-wnba-franchise-good-move-2.html#post157637) and decided to check up on things.

2) Read the story closely:  http://newsok.com/redhawks-mantle-family-holding-talks-on-museumbrspan-classhl2redhawks-baseballspan/article/3277109/  THERE IS NO NEWS HERE.  It's a status piece that uses some fresh quotes from Redhawks owner Scott Pruitt who claims that "talks are ongoing."  But where's the quote from the Mantle family?  Oh, there's not one.  Where's the "no comment" from the Mantle family?  Oh, there's not one.  Did Lackmeyer even contact them to find out where they were at on things?  I don't know, but he doesn't say so.

This OKC booster-journalist saw an opportunity to make it appear that OKC was getting the museum.  He apparently didn't contact the Mantle family, nor did he mention Tulsa's competing efforts for the museum, which apparenly would give it a freestanding building in the Brady as opposed to an add-on in a stadium plaza.

The story is a badly reported fluff piece.  Call me when somebody talks to the Mantle family.
