I don't think you are out of line at all on your comment about letting people in a shared space know out of politeness.  What blew me away was the supposed 15 or so people who complained about being "offended" by it.

I think I smelled a rat when I read about the "supposed 15 or so people who complained about being offended by it."

I think this is classic office politics involving a pent-up middle management egotist using coercion to justify removing the flag... of course, the supervisor in question took down the flag when the other sup had the day off, rather than confront her in private or take his beef with her to a co-worker or superior.... typical office cowardice.

Of course, we're all only guessing... but this is Arlington, Texas we're talking about here... maybe the "15 or so people" were.... wait for it.... TEXAS SECESSIONISTS!  I blame Gov. Rick Perry for this!   ;D

"I was told that several people found it offensive but that if even one person complained, it would have to be taken down to maintain an air of neutrality." McLucas said.

"The other supervisor took it down unknown to me because I wasn't at work that day."

My guess is that the supervisor who complained and took the flag off the wall was an instigator who griped to the "15 or so people," some of whom had to be people who called him "boss" (I'm guessing FIVE is closer to the truth here).....
