Forget Snopes, RM has spoken. My GF has dilligently collected the tabs for her God daughter for who knows how long.  Hmmm how to break it to them and I shudder to think how many cans went to the land fill b/c people think the tab was more important. Something just didn't sound right.  I'd rather mail a check to the Shriners or save my coins for them than to sweat what would happen if I miss a tab here and there 8)

I didn't mean for you to take offense to what I asked. I was just checking. I'm glad you're family is involved the Shriners are a very good foundation. They actually want my husband to join and he wants to. One of the drivers gave me his number when we went to Louisiana and told me he could help or should I say show him how to get in.

As far as the pop can tabs go they are contracted with some company and get more than what they are worth.

As far as what I said about them being in debt. What I meant was they were lacking $200 billion. Not in debt is what I meant if I put that. That's clearly not what i meant.

Honestly I don't care how someone donates. But some people don't like to donate money but it's not hard to take a tab off a can since they get more for the tabs then what anyone walking in somewhere would. We take our tabs off give them to the Shriners and then take all our cans when we have a bunch and take those in to an aluminum place and take the money and donate to them.

I feel that's the least we could do for them. I try to give back to those foundations that have helped us. We had a house fire and the Red Cross gave us a $500 gift card for clothing etc. and put us in a hotel even one that would let our dog stay with us. So we donate back to them also through my husband's job. SORRY to all those who criticize me for just letting the public know about an easy way to donate to a GREAT FOUNDATION.

Keirasmommy

Another thing when i gave the Shriner my grocery bag full of tabs. He said to me "You wouldn't believe how much we get for these!" Why would he say that if it wasn't true?

Point being it's a way to help a foundation for people who don't have much money to donate to a great foundation is all I'm saying!

Then just donate money.  The tabs thing is obviously a scam, no matter what someone has told you.  Nothing better then putting pen to checkbook or hand in wallet when it comes to donating.  Or even volunteering your time with some charities.  I've been an MD volunteer since my mid twenties, although I have a personal stake in it as well.  Lot's of Bowlathons; I even appeared on the national telethon back when I lived in Texas (company sent us to Vegas for that).  We used to have pie-throwing contests to raise money for MD at our work (until some doosh put the kibosh on that referencing 'insurance issues' when we asked why).

We also raise money for the JDRF (Juveline Diabetes Research Foundation), although I always found it quite interesting that a lot of my co-workers, to raise money, would have cookie bake sales.  Considering what we were raising money for...maybe they were sweetened with sucralose or something.

Why would he exclaim it if it were?  Makes you think.

Keirasmommy

Why would he lie about them getting more than what they're worth? What would be the point in lying and dealing with a bunch of pop can tabs?

Anyway donating to any foundation is a GREAT thing to do. I made this topic because while at the Orthopedic Center in Louisiana I seen SO many children my hearts went out to. I'd do anything I could to help them.

Some people can't afford to just go donate money!!! Have you ever thought about that one? I'm not saying everyone should donate or worry about one tab not making it into a jar. But if you have the time why not?

custosnox

If you read the full article, near the bottom it talks about how Shriners started taking the tabs since everyone was collecting them due to this urban myth.  They simply recycle them at the going rate ($.03 per 100 taps).  So when you donated your bag full (I'm assuming grocery bag), about 1000 tabs, than you donated $.30.  I think I would rather grab the change off my nightstand and donate it.  It gives them more, and means less effort on my part.

Tell you what, I'm not going to argue this point with you.

I will say this; don't buy pop/beer/whatever for a week, then save that money and donate it to the Shriners, or whatever charity you feel so inclined.  I'm betting that the donation will be substantially more than the money equivalent of the tabs or even the cans themselves.

And some people don't have the time.  Sorry...

Conan71

Please don't mistake that I don't think the Shriner's Hospitals are worthy cause, they most certainly are.  I simply have to question why anyone would give double the going rate for a pop tab unless it's some foundation which does this as a "matching" donation.  In which case, why not just write a damn check instead of making people collect pop tabs in the first place.  Seems like the bulk of the can weight is in the body of the can and it would be infinitely more valuable.

Great topic though and I will remember the Shriners in my cash giving this year because you brought it up.  I'll still recycle as usual and let my cash be a more beneficial gift rather than feeling guilty every time I forget to pull the pop tab.

Keirasmom. I just want to let you know that I am glad that you are on this forum.
When I first started posting as you have. I had the feeling that some of the answers to questions I asked were somewhat abrasive. After a period of time and reading more of the main posters on here. You will find they are some of the most intelligent, incisive and humorous bunch of guy's on the net. Ladies not excluded.
I do not possess the greatest of writing skills, but I feel as time has passed by. I have been accepted by content of posts and not so much by skill of posting.
So please continue to post as I have and you will find a number of times positive and not so positive responses that you will come to enjoy from this great forum.
Have a wonderful day.

Hi my daughter recently went to the Shriner's Children's Hospital in Louisiana. We go back in a month to get her braces. They took us down there, paid for our hotel room and treated my 2 year old for free!!!! WHAT A BLESSING!!!!!
Here's the thing! With the recession going on they're hospitals cost alot to keep them going and to be able to treat kids who otherwise wouldn't be able to get any help. The cost of keeping up the hospitals is quite a bit and they are lacking in quite 1/4 of the money to help keep them going.

They take money donations and also pop can tab donations! Every tab helps. They are actually contracted through a company that gives them more money for those tabs then what they are worth so they do help alot. There's an Akdar Shriners Temple at 28th & Sheridan. PLEASE PEOPLE TAKE THE TIME TO TAKE THE TABS OFF YOUR CANS AND SAVE THEM. YOU CAN DROP THEM OFF AT THE SHRINERS TEMPLE AND THEY TAKE THEM WHERE THEY NEED TO TURN THEM IN. WITHOUT THEM MY DAUGHTER WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO GET BRACES THAT OUR HEALTH INSURANCE DOESN'T COVER AND THEY ARE OVER $1,300 BRACES THAT SHE MAY HAVE TO GET EVERY 6 MONTHS! PLEASE HELP!!!!!

They helped my son too.  We had taken him to several doctors spent many $$$$$ and no one could figure out what was wrong with him.  Got a referral from the school nurse in Owasso to the Shriniers Hospital.  My wife and son went to Louisiana too, driven in a van, put up for the night.

The Shriners Hospital zeroed right in on his problem, Myasthenia Gravis.  They made a referral to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, found a doctor in OKC that has been treating him and helping him ever since .  We still have a ways to go, but the help they have provide my son is immeasurable.

The Shriners and Jerry Lewis MD telethons are at the top of my donation list.

The Shriners deserve all the support you can give them, from buying their onions, buying tickets to the circus, making donations for their silly balloons or whatever else you can do for them.

My wife and I will be forever grateful for what they did for us.
Trust but verify

Keirasmommy

Okay the Shriners take the tabs to a donation center which do match the donations and they do get alot more for the tabs than what someone else would. We're also keeping the cans and donating the money we get for them to the Shriners.

I'm sorry but I'm not rich. So I donate the best way I can. I'm sorry I'm not rich and can pull out a checkbook and write a check.

I guess GUIDO has a ton of money and can afford to donate. My husband works I'm going to school and we have a 2 year old and twin 9 month olds. So money is tight!

AT LEAST I'M TRYING TO DONATE TO THEM. EVERY PENNY COUNTS! ANYONE WOULD KNOW THAT IF EVERYONE ON HERE WOULD DONATE A DOLLAR OR EVERYONE IN TULSA WOULD DONATE A DOLLAR OR A PENNY THAT WOULD PROBABLY HELP ALOT!!!
I'M SORRY THAT I'M DOING WHAT I CAN TO HELP DONATE BACK. ONCE AGAIN SORRY I'M NOT RICH!

No one was trying to belittle you, please don't get all defensive or apologize for not being able to do more.  Just the fact you brought this to our attention has probably ended up in more donations to them.  I think we all agree the Shriners are a worthwhile cause and your post has brought attention to the Shriner Hospitals and the good work they do.  We can all give in our own way.  For some of us it's simply easier to write a check.

Keira,
Don't get all twisted up on this.  Posting here completely lacks tone and context, so it can be tough to "see" what people are really saying as is so easy when in person and you can detect all those things.  I think everyone here is very sympathetic if not downright empathetic with you about this topic.
