For many music lovers, Mozart's "Jupiter" Symphony is a summation of everything that had happened in symphonic music up to that point and foreshadows the works of Beethoven. Mozart's revolutionary counterpoint in the fourth movement involves five different melodies simultaneously, making it a challenge for any orchestra that programs it.

The Symphonie Fantastique is Berlioz's most well-known work. This revolutionary masterpiece marked a breakthrough in the composer's career and was the starting point of his mature work as a symphonic composer. The influence of Beethoven is clearly evident, as is Berlioz's genius and originality striking out in uniquely new directions of composition, orchestral color and sound.

Ron Spigelman, guest conductor
