(CNN) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is expected to announce Friday afternoon that the Pentagon will enhance the nation's ability to defend itself from a nuclear attack by North Korea, a U.S. defense official told CNN.
Hagel will announce that the United States will deploy up to 14 additional ground-based missile interceptors on the U.S. West Coast, according to the official.
Part of the move would involve reopening a missile field at Fort Greely, Alaska, and some of the interceptors would be based in California. It would take two years for all of the systems to come online.

In 2009 he closed the missile defense base in Ft. Greeley Alaska.  Now that we are under threat, he has decided to reopen it.  The problem is that it will be years before it is fully functional.

So, yes.  He did "cut defense of the Pacific Rim," and the only reason I post Darth Vader is because he warned that North Korea was a threat and a test of the administration's diplomacy and defense skills, and he warned that cutting missile defense was a bad idea.  He has been proven correct on both counts.

Now it is only a matter of time until Iran forces the president to reverse his decision on the European missile defense shield.  There is no containment without a lid!

Thanks, I needed that laugh! The US has not had a "coastal missile defense" system since "W" was still looking to score pot and cocaine at age 24 (last missiles deactivated 1974).

The Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty of 1972

Technical, economic and political problems described resulted in the ABM treaty of 1972, which restricted the deployment of strategic (not tactical) anti-ballistic missiles.

By the ABM treaty and a 1974 revision, each country was allowed to deploy a mere 100 ABMs to protect a single, small area. The Soviets retained their Moscow defences. The U.S. designated their ICBM sites near Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota, where Safeguard was already under advanced development. The radar systems and anti-ballistic missiles were approximately 90 miles north/northwest of Grand Forks AFB, near Concrete, North Dakota. The missiles were deactivated in 1975. The main radar site (PARCS) is still used as an early warning ICBM radar, facing relative north. It is located at Cavalier Air Force Station, North Dakota.

and neither one was ever designed to intercept an ICBM(although a version of the NIKE, the NIKE X was supposed to be cable of ICBM intercept upon re-entry). They were meant as a last line of defense in the event of an attack by the USSR using Bear, Blackjack and Backfire bombers. The BOMARC's has nuclear capabilities, but that was only to create a wall of radiation and hope that the shockwave would knock the bombers out of the air.

Although the missile systems were almost useless against the Blackjack and the Backfire, as they were to fly at Mach 1 to mach 2 at low levels to avoid radar then pull up at the last moment to fire nuclear cruise missiles similar to the USAF Hound Dog http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGM-28_Hound_Dog to reach in beyond the coastline. But with advancements in ICBM's on both sides these systems became useless, much like satelites mad the DEW Line Stations useless in the 80's.

The missile defense system in Alaska that was reopend after a brief closure is small compared to what there was and it was the only antiICBM base.

After the United states announced that it would withdraw from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, Fort Greely was selected as a site for the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system. Starting in the summer of 2002, the United States government began work on the missile defense installation at Fort Greely, planning to deploy a total of 25 to 30 anti-ballistic missiles by 2010. Concurrently, the Missile Defense Command took command of Fort Greely, relinquishing direct Army control, while the Army retained control of the nearby Donnelly Training Area.

How much time do we have once NK launches a missile? ...assuming they have an actual ability to deliver?

Which city will be their target? Will they have multiple strikes simultaneously?

Current counter-ICBM systems

There are only two systems in the world that can intercept ICBMs. Besides them, many smaller systems exist (tactical ABMs), that generally cannot intercept intercontinental strategic missiles, even if within range—an incoming ICBM simply moves too fast for these systems.

The Russian A-35 anti-ballistic missile system for defense of Moscow, whose development started in 1971. Presently active, it is called A-135 and uses Gorgon and Gazelle missiles with nuclear warheads.

The U.S. Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD; previously known as National Missile Defense – NMD) system has recently reached initial operational capability. Instead of using an explosive charge, it launches a kinetic projectile. The George W. Bush administration accelerated development and deployment of a system proposed in 1998 by the Clinton administration. The system is a dual purpose test and interception facility in Alaska, and in 2006 was operational with a few interceptor missiles. The Alaska site provides more protection against North Korean missiles or launches from Russia or China, but is likely less effective against missiles launched from the Middle East. President Bush referenced the 9/11 attacks and the proliferation of ballistic missiles as reasons for missile defense.
