New metal-detection technology introduced this fall at Tulsa Public Schools football games has added an extra layer of security, making the experience safer for everyone, officials said.

Manufactured by Metrasens Ultra, the advanced detection devices are currently in use at all district high schools, middle schools and alternative schools, officials
said.  Chris Arbeitman, Metrasens vice president of market and business development, said the company has placed the system in schools elsewhere in Oklahoma and nationwide.  "It's unlike anything else out there," he said, adding that the technology involves "ferrous metal detection."

Matthias Wicks, TPS campus police chief, who was involved in the decision to acquire the technology, said those were key factors.
Since the district began using the devices, no weapons have been detected, he said.

Finally the fact that these devices detect only ferromagnetic materials is ... a disadvantage. They will not detect non-ferromagnetic metals (like copper or aluminum)
