Recently the Government of Iraq finished the long task of writing a Constitution to be placed before the Citizens of Iraq for adoption....

"George W" had the following to say about the Constitution written by the Iraqi Government....
quote:

"Their example is an inspiration to all who share the universal values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law," Bush told reporters from a helicopter hangar at his Texas ranch. "This is a document of which the Iraqis and the rest of the world can be proud."

My first read of their Constitution and reaction to same was slightly less enthusiastic...

Below a portion of the Newly written Constitution and something that must surely scream Theocracy.. to more than just me......
quote:

CHAPTER ONE: Basic Principles

Article (1): The Republic of Iraq is an independent, sovereign nation, and the system of rule in it is a democratic, federal, representative (parliamentary) republic.

Article (2): First, Islam is the official religion of the state and is a basic source of legislation:

a) No law can be passed that contradicts the undisputed rules of Islam.

b) No law can be passed that contradicts the principles of democracy.

c) No law can be passed that contradicts the rights and basic freedoms outlined in this constitution.

Second, this constitution guarantees the Islamic identity of the majority of the Iraqi people, and the full religious rights for all individuals, and the freedom of creed and religious practices.

Maybe it is just me.. But, for the price in human casualties not to mention the Billions of Dollars this war has cost, I would have hoped that Iraq would have waited till a little further down in the Constitution to tell us that the Laws of Islam are now the Law of the Land.

For your reference to this subject the following is a Directory of the Laws of Islam..
