NSU is apparently getting some negative feedback from alumni and students in ragrds to them changing their name from "Redmen."

Indians challenge use of Mascots

TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Northeastern State University President Larry Williams says he has heard from a stream of unhappy people since the school dropped its Redmen mascot, but he believes it was the right thing to do.

Speaking at the Native American Journalists Association's national convention in Tulsa today, Williams said his responsibility is to protect the university and the integrity of a degree from the school.

The N-C-A-A has prohibited schools with mascots deemed to be offensive from hosting championship events. Schools are also being required to remove offensive images from their uniforms by August 2008.

Northeastern State hopes to choose its new mascot by December.

Speakers at the convention also talked about a new petition to cancel the Washington Redskins' trademark, claiming that the N-F-L team's name is racially offensive.
