Anybody know what the plan is for that old service station at 6th and Elgin?  They're digging up the old fuel tanks, and I saw Michael Sager on site...but he was on the phone and I didn't want to interrupt.  If Sager's involved, I know it will be cool.  Just wondering if anyone has the scoop.

Not so cool. Sager owns it I believe. Called him a couple years ago about buying or leasing it. His reply was, pay me what I get in parking leases monthly and we'll talk. Had no interest in it as historical. The tanks being dug up may be because of insurance or something.

To Mr Sager's credit it may be added........

More than 15 years ago a friend of mine rented space from him that was located in a warehouse.. You used a freight elevator to get to the floor that he rented...

He was the only tenant... He was a drummer so it worked out great.. It was somewhere in the Brady area.It may have very well been the very first "Loft"
Point being.......... Maybe not always the most cordial person... He has vision that many lack.

It's going to be rehabbed into a car-rental property. The owner recently received a grant from the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Act to help in this regard.

The old cottage-style Phillips 66 station there will be part of the office, I've been told. The station, built in 1931, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

once the property was eligible for a grant then its historical relevance became...relevant.

I met with Micahel Sager last year and suggested that he see if there might be grant monies for Route 66 events and properties. I take it that his raised eyebrows were an indication of the gears turning in that direction... LOL..

While I appreciate that Mr Sager at least has a vision, and some monetary muscle, I have yet to see any of his rehabs that I would consider "cool" in an aesthetic sense. I do credit Sager kudos for assisting in keeping the Blue Dome Festival grassroots and alive.

After all, he is a business man, and his LLC is about turning a profit, yes?
