Ammunition and pollutant disposal

Rico asked about ammunition disposal on another thread and I started this one to answer it.

The weekend event at the fairgrounds when we take all this stuff is this weekend.

We take all kinds of stuff, including ammunition. My event literature says we take ammunition that is 50 caliber in size or smaller. He asked about stuff that is larger.

My first question is, what kind of weapons you got, Rico?

The Tulsa Police Department Bomb Squad works at this event and handles all the ammunition we collect. We average over 20,000 bullets on a normal collection weekend. We have also accepted some wierd stuff, including mortar shells, hand grenades, land mines, etc., but I prefer to speak to you beforehand and make other plans.

My prefered method of getting rid of ammo is firing it, call me wierd...

But I am always amazed by how much ammunition we get in. The Bomb squad takes it off-site pops it in their little bucket like popcorn.

Usually the story is they don't have that gun anymore or they are afraid to fire really old bullets in their weapons. We also get a lot of stuff when the grandparents pass away or are moved to an assisted living arrangement.

This is the weekend to clean out your house.

Go through the garage, have the spouse go through the medicine cabinet and under the sink, and look at every container of chemical.
I recommend making a list and then deciding what you would really use again soon and bringing everything else to us.

Chemicals aren't bad, but storing open containers of them for no reason makes your home, your neighborhood, and your planet less safe.

I regularly fire 1930's vintage ammunition in my Mauser's.  With maybe a 2% failure rate.  I will be disposing of nothing.  [8D]

Is there a handy list of the sort of items we should have in mind?  I know I have a ton of stuff, but many are things that I reach over every week to get the gas can or that can of WD40.  They have become invisible to me:)  I think it would be helpful to start with a list of things I should hunt around the house for - cans of paint, old oil , old grenades, etc.

No commercial businesses including non-profits, schools, churches and day care centers. I want to take your stuff, but we can only take from residences only.

I was just thinking of the crazy possibility of every little old man in Tulsa having a foot locker of 50 caliber ammo... You know... just in case he gets in a jam or something..[]

One year a lady brought in a small, sawed-off shotgun. She told the surveyor who called me over. While she was in line I went over and got the police officer and when she got to the unloading area, we had her pop the trunk.

The officer leaned in and picked up the 15 inch long shotgun and held it up to get a good look. The lady closed her trunk and got back in behind the wheel. I stood their watching all this happen for a few seconds then asked her a simple question, "Excuse me Ma'am, where did you get that shotgun?"

She put the car in gear and said, "what shotgun?" and drove off.

I live close enough to the Fairgrounds that I could just fire my mortars over for collection if I can just get my damn trajectory calcs to come out right.
