It's not about dominance.  It's toughness, it's where you derive strength of schedule.  Pound for pound top to bottom, none are quite as tough as the SEC.  And when you end up in the position OU's in, you probably should count yourself lucky that the BigXII has an automatic bid.

The schools that weren't on top of the BigXII played some tough opponents, mostly losses.  Certainly the 4 leaders (except possibly Mizzou) played no one of value in non-conference.

All from CBS Sportsline.

Texas:

Sep 1   Arkansas St.    Won 21-13
Sep 8   TCU   Won 34-13
Sep 15   @UCF   Won 35-32
Sep 22   Rice   Won 58-14

OU:

Sep 1   North Texas    Won 79-10
Sep 8   Miami (Fla.)   Won 51-13
Sep 15   Utah St.   Won 54-3
Sep 21   @Tulsa   Won 62-21

Kansas:

Sep 1   C. Michigan    Won 52-7
Sep 8   Southeastern Louisiana   Won 62-0
Sep 15   Toledo   Won 45-13
Sep 22   Fla. International   Won 55-3

Mizzou:

Sep 1   @Illinois    Won 40-34
Sep 8   @Mississippi   Won 38-25
Sep 15   W. Michigan   Won 52-24
Sep 22   Illinois State   Won 38-17

Maybe Illinois, but I have plenty of doubt about their abilities.  Texas really struggled through non-conference, almost lost to Sunbelt Arkansas State.

Texas was really flat this year.  They didn't impress me at all and really didn't do much to legitimize OU being the top of the heap in B12 South as a major accomplishment.
