We sent two of our four dogs and a bird away with the mother-in-law when she moved out so we had room for another pet. My wife took the children to the animal shelter this week to pick out a cat.

The shelter has been in the news lately because of a report about the conditions and the number of animals overwhelming the staff and budget. What can each of us do to help? Adopt an animal.

The cat we got was an adult female with the softest fur I have ever felt. My daughter named her Rosalita and she is just beautiful. One of the dogs we have is afraid of her, but the other wants to chew her to pieces. I feel pretty certain that in time, they will be friends or at least tolerate each other.

I am pretty much a dog guy. Our West Highlands Terrier (named Lambeau after the Packers field) and our Pug (named KT after the Mayor who is such a dog lover) still get top billing on the pet list. But the cat sure livens up our house and it is way more fun than a bird.
Power is nothing till you use it.

I always get my cats used. Don't like the new cat smell.

We sometimes have cats or kittens show up on the doorstep where they stare longingly at my wife.

"Don't feed that cat" I say.

She gives me the 'stupid husband' look.

"OK, don't feed that cat AGAIN!"

Some of the cats have hung around here for years.

May you live in interesting times.

I have a female cat I got from the shelter a few years ago. She was in the back room, where many are never adopted. The card on her cage said "Bad attitude" but she seemed friendly to me.

I adopted her on the spot, and she's been a wonderful and sweet cat, with no signs of any bad attitude at all.

Congrats on your new pet, I'm sure she'll be a welcome additon to the family.
