Trash to Energy Plant for Downed Trees [rumor]

I don't think the trash-to energy plant could be used for tree debris disposal for many reasons. I asked around and the only place this rumor is found is on this forum. I could find no conversations about this at city hall, including at today's TARE board meeting.

One, the city does not own it. I doubt the city wants to enter into a multi-million dollar lease arrangement for just a few months of operation.

Two, new operation would require a new air permit. It is not regulated the same as a limb pile. Air permits take years to acquire.

Third, it has been mothballed and would take some time to retrofit to handle the waste and the pit would fill up with the first three or four hundred trucks. The facility was designed to handle municipal waste, including all types of trash not just lightweight tree debris.

Fourth, the fire would burn too hot for the current design of the plant. Again, it was designed for something quite different.

And fifth, generated steam would have no end use without real problems. Sunoco has already found other ways to get their steam and no other customer is close enough without transportation steam pressure loss.

The generator could make electricity, but only two thirds of the burn units are hooked up to the generator.

Squash the rumors...

Seemed like a credible rumor to me and I took care to make sure I posted it as something I learned, was not sure about, etc. and not absolute fact.

If nothing else at least it got discussion started on what to do with all the limbs.  Keep your ear to the ground RM, let me know what the city is planning on doing with the masses of limbs.

It was never economically viable, without the City of Tulsa MANDATING that all trash was required to be sent to the plant.

and right there was the problem.  Nothing wrong with the plant, it was the stupid Tulsa leaders that ****canned it.

I also heard the Organite caused the ice storm... someone call someone!  I thought it was a good tidbit, I'm still resilient.  RM is usually on the ball though, so we will have to wait and see [B)]

Shutting down this plant was the proper thing to do. Leave it that way.

Now, if we can just stop paying for it. Kitty reduced our trash rates only $1 when the average Tulsan was paying $5-$6/Mo for the white elephant.

That's $10 Million a year in overcharges now.
