I AM LEGEND - 4.75

Most enjoyable and memorable movie I've seen in a very long time. Not what any of the group of us that went expected - exceeded expectations. Saw it on IMAX and still have the fingernail marks on my arm from my wife squeezing when the "fast zombies" showed up.

When the movie was over I headed to the john.  A large rather intimidating fellow was in there that sat one row ahead of my wife and I.  Recognizing me he said, staring straight ahead - "if its dark outside now I ain't leavin'."

Made me chuckle and I shared his sentiment.  That movie kept me on edge for sure.

Eastern Promises, via the Netflix:

3 stars, and barely that.

Viggo, however, gets 4 stars for his acting chops, and 5 stars for having the stones to film an extended fight scene entirely in the nude.

On a 5 star rating:

0 - So bad, it's worth recommending simply because well, its THAT bad.  (House of the Dead.  The Punisher)
1 - Walked out,l or should have (Hostel)
2 - Sat through it because i had paid (The Life Aquatic)
3 - Was worth watching, but I probably wont be talking about it (New Stars War movies)
4 - Good movie, very entertaining and you should see it. (Pirates movies)
5 - See it now.  Entertaining and meaningful. (American Beauty)

I Am Legend:  4.   I was expecting Will Smith does Jurassic Park.  Kinda sorta scary, but more on the adventure side.  That's not what I got.  Freaky movie all the way through, keeps you tense - but it doesn't forgo plot to get it done.  Good story line, sad, action packed...  good flick.

Bee Movie: 3+.  It's a pretty good Kid's movie, nothing great.  Worth renting with a 5-10 year old for a family movie night, but don't expect Shrek, Ratatouille, or Cars.

Sweeny Tod:  4.5.  Love the play.  Love Tim Burton.  Love Johnny Depp.  Loved this movie.  A great anti-hero story coupled with actually singing from a star ladened cast (also heavily Harry Pottered cast with Snape, Bellatrix, & Wormtail drawing major rolls that I caught).  The cinematography was what one would expect from Tim Burton, the story moved along in spite of some lengthy songs.  Keeping true to the play (NOT a movie of the play though) it did drag on at times.  But the singing was well done and catchy, with plenty of gore sprinkled in for good measure.

I'm a bit of a movie freak.  From Tsotsi to City of God and from Stranger than Fiction to Pulp Fiction or Casa Blanca to Citzen Cane.  All sorts of funky little gems in my collection. Semi-Obscure recommendations:

Stranger than Fiction -  One of Will Ferrell's least popular films it is by far the best.  Subdued with somewhat dry humor.  Great story.

Off the Map -   Slow moving.  Strange.  One my favorite "never heard of it" movies.

I need to catalog my movies.  Someone motivate me.

Top 5 list:
American Beauty
American History X
The Big Lebowski
Saving Private Ryan (has to be one war flick)
and... I can't chose a last one.  Will get back to you. [:P]

I haven't seen most of those flicks, but I will agree with 'Stranger Than Fiction'.  After his tirades in movies like 'Talladega Nights', this was a bit refreshing.  Him as an IRS auditor was just classic.  I thought Maggie Gyllenhaal was quite good in it as well.  Great premise.

I have stranger than fiction on my netflix queue, just hasn't gotten here yet. (plus my home theater is a bit sick at the moment)

It's a good, quirky movie.  Maggie Gylenhaal is indeed super-cool, and Dustin Hoffman makes a good rambly professor-type.

I think Will Ferrell is another one of those comics who can play a surprisingly effective straight man.  Think Robin Williams in "Dead Poets," or Jim Carrey in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," or, I'd argue, Steve Carrell in "The 40 Year Old Virgin."

I saw Helvetica last night at the Circle Cinema. Yes, a movie about a font and it was awesome.

You gave Beowulf a 3??

To me, it's a big, fat zero. It was seriously one of the all-time worst movies I've seen (aside from Sunshine).

It wasn't the big scary Italian guy who eats at Flemings was it? [}:)]
