Question about TU for people who went to TU

So as students, where did you go for fun?  And I mean to drink and carouse and get arrested for public intox, etc.  Doesn't seem to be a lot of bars and such within walking distance around there, and I'd think there would be. Is 11th and Harvard it?

UT means the University of Texas at Austin in big twelve country.  TU teams Temple on the East coast.  But 'round these parts it means the University of Tulsa.  ("T, U, LSA!")

When I was a student we did some drinking at the Buck.  Some at Hardwoods (not atrociously named BallerZ).  We did more drinking at the Gray Snail than anywhere else probably, but caused plenty of trouble on Brookside (The Brook & Brookside bar), McNellies, Empire occasionally and a few other watering holes.  If we ever wanted to get REALLY drunk and arrested we could always go to Caravan (don't ask, I really don't know and am proud to have been against this practice).

The undergrad at Tulsa are all Greek.  So imagine a large portion of the imbibing goes on there - judging by the beer cans surrounding the houses.

The law school was also big on house parties.  Study hard, play hard.  Law school is hard on the liver.

I bartended once for a cadre of law students at DePaul U in Chicago.  They drank like fishes, but were getting so little sleep, their tolerances were completely compromised.  You could give em a jack and coke or two and they'd be giggling and falling off their chairs.  One more and they'd pass right out on the bar.

Sadly, even for well-loved regulars, they were crappy tippers.

So, what, people go off campus?  They drive around looking for good bars?

I was too poor to go to TU and my parents made too much money for me to get any financial aid. I never could understand why they asked how much money your parents made? When your 18 and your arse is kicked out of the house and your on your own, why would it matter how much income someone else has? I remember one semester I scraped up enough money to pay for admissions and such but then wasnt able to come up with enough for classes and books.... that sucked lol. No refund on the admissions either.

On topic, all the TU kids I talk to hit up the same bars CF said--Gray Snail, Empire, the Brook, Brookside Bar.  I always wondered why there weren't cooler bars on 11th St, though.  Maybe after TU's expansion is finished a couple of establishments will move in.

I did try. But I couldnt get anything. Perhaps things were different loan wise back in the mid to late 80s. Plus the whole idea of going into debt when you dont even know yet what you want to be or what degree or field of study you want to go into was very frightening to begin with. I didnt even know if I was smart enough or good enough to go to college there and pass my classes. I remember wandering around the campus trying to find certain buildings and that nobody seemed to want to help and acted put off if they had to stop what they were doing to answer any questions. I wasnt even sure what questions to ask? It was all new and frightening. Filled out all kinds of forms and got the ol, sorry we cant help you, you dont qualify. etc. etc. I just remember feeling really lost and not knowing what to do.

I can relate to some of those poor north side kids. Though my parents had money, they didnt give me any lol. They never talked about college or helped me with anything. We rarely talked period. Didnt have any friends. High school teachers didnt talk about college or counsel you. I knew I should go to college if I wanted to be something but you go there and your completely in an alien environment not knowing a thing about how things work and the people there have jobs to do, people standing in line and waiting on them. You cant hog their time. You get handed PILES of booklets, forms, pamphlets, papers, etc. that you can barely make heads or tails of lol... I dont see how any young person could figure it out all by themselves and feel confident they were making the right choices. Plus your spending a lot of your time, energy and stress just trying to keep a roof over your head and eat as it is.

Thank goodness for TCC. You could just take one or two classes at a time. All I could afford. They are inexpensive and you dont have to pay hundreds of dollars like at TU for admissions. And at TU, if you werent able to enroll that sememster, you had to pay admissions again the next sememster. The cost of even getting "in the door" at TU was more than 2 classes plus books at TCC.

But, to the subject at hand lol, I think that the new housing on campus will start to spur the growth of a "campus hang out" or two nearby. TU is still a small university though.

As a current TU student, I'd say that people like to go to McNellie's, Kilkenny's, the Grey Snail, Sutures, Vintage 1740 (was just there last night), Boston's, Caz's... Mostly places away from 11th Street.

And by the way Artist, I don't know what kind of admissions process you went through, but to apply to TU only costs $35, and you only do it once, as long as you enroll within a certain number of years (2 maybe?).  If it used to cost hundreds of dollars, I'm glad I wasn't around back then!

And not all of the undergrads are Greek...hardly.  If I remember correctly, the statistic is around 20% of undergrads, which really isn't that much.  They're just very noticeable.

Actually, it is quite high, considering the average for most other schools is 12%.

I'd also like to tack Arnie's to your list, as I see quite a few students and alumni there.

pretty much summed it up between the bars and the frat parties.  We also went to crawpappies on occasion and bostons as well.

Because neither the campus nor the city is big enough to support yet another district. Cherry Street is less than 2 miles away. That's really TU's "campus corner".

I think the TU area could support at least a micro district or campus village. One problem I have always had with the area is that - at least the last time I checked - both Harvard and 11th are 40 mph, with some cars/trucks pushing it to 45 mph at times. Not exactly inviting conditions for any kind of walkable district.

I think 11th should be slowed down around the campus to 30 or 35 mph. If anyone needs to move through faster, they can use I244 - which is only about a mile away and has plenty of room.

Now THAT idea I like. And allow street parking along the whole strip from TU to Downtown if its not already that way.

However, I always harp on getting the city to move on the Pearl District 6th street infill plan. To me that would be the BEST way to connect TU to downtown and create a lively, walkable district with the canals, park space, ponds, and biking trails going through the center and midrise living, shopping, etc. on either side. The old TU green is right off 6th street, you could continue that with a straight shot of open space right to downtown and focus development on either side.

Completely agree.  The Pearl would be a natural off-campus village for TU.

TU asked how much your parents made because that is the way the Federal grant money is set up.  However, Stafford loans are not tied in any way to anyone's income.  The fact that most people have no idea and those of is WITH THE LOAN barely know is another great example of a horribly complex Federal program.
