FOP President May Resign Amid Accusations

The president of Tulsa's Fraternal Order of Police is under fire after witnesses say they saw him cheat to help a new recruit get a higher ranking.

President Darin Filak will likely resign this week and three other Tulsa police officers are now under investigation. The FOP would not comment, saying it is an internal matter. But, we did speak with Tulsa Police Chief Ron Palmer, who says he is disappointed because he expected the FOP to handle things with integrity. The Tulsa Police Department just welcomed 23 officers in training. But, before the graduation, the officers drew numbers for rank.

"If you're number three as opposed to say number 23 on the list, it could mean the significance of working either a nighttime division for a long while or getting the opportunity for a daytime position," Palmer says. Tulsa police have selected the Fraternal Order of Police to handle the drawing for years. But, this year, FOP President Darin Filak is accused of handing over a favor.

"The way we understand it right now is the palming of a number as you would draw out of a hat," Palmer says. Witnesses say Filak gave the number two to an apprentice officer going through the academy. "I mean there are so many witnesses that saw what happened and it's disappointing to the police department giving them this duty and assuming it would be done with some degree of integrity," says Palmer.

After Chief Palmer was told about the incident, all 23 apprentice police officers re-drew numbers. But, Palmer says it's a disappointing way for them to remember their academy training. "Day in, day out, pounding into their head that we're about integrity, we're about character, we're about honesty, all those good values. And, the last day they're in class before they graduate, they see the FOP president doesn't have that same value."

Chief Palmer says he has spoken to Filak, who he says suggested he would turn in his resignation sometime this week. The Tulsa Police Department is also holding a separate investigation into Filak as well as three other officers who may have been involved. We want to make one thing clear. There is only one member of the new recruit class under investigation.
Power is nothing till you use it.

Cheating on a rank lottery...  and I thought the no-drug-testing issue would have caught up with them first.  Amazing.

It's true.  He is an embarrassment to the Tulsa Police force and to the union. Hopefully, he will be thrown out on his a$$.

Equally disturbing is that the brand new recruit was in on it. She has shown herself corruptable and really unworthy of being a Tulsa police officer. They are both guilty of fraud.
