Lamson's Lament

Currently, the Tulsa Drillers purportedly operate under a Year-to-Year lease with the Tulsa County Fairgrounds Authority.

That gives them maximum flexibility to move to another venue, or another city, on a very short notice.

However, if what we hear on TGOV is true, the Drillers will sign a 30-year lease agreement, indenturing the Drillers, their Successors or Assigns to play at their new Stadium for THIRTY years.

WHO can predict what will transpire over the next 30 years????

Do the Drillers have an OUT from their new contract, in case:

A.  Attendance FALLS with the movement from the County Fairgrounds to the 'hood.

Families on a budget just might not like to PAY for parking.

or,

B.  What if Mr. Lamson is forced to raise his ticket price to help pay for this elaborate White Elephant?

Raising ticket prices usually results in REDUCED demand.  That's called Economics 101.

Even LESS fans going downtown discourages the remaining diehard fans.

C.  What if the State Transportation Department or the U.S. DOT tells the stadium to Turn OFF their Stadium lights because it is interfering with motorists transitting I-244?

You think that those Casino L.E.D. signs are bright?

The stadium will be HARD Against I-244.......and, they play MOST of their games at NIGHT........

Hmmmmmh?

Oops!

I SUSPECT that in the fine print of their lease agreement there are certain performance thresholds.

If certain attendance levels are not reached for a certain period of time, they can vamoose.

I don't usually engage you because it is rarely worthwhile.  But in this case . . .

You cannot cite a single example of a minor league ballclub whose attendance fell after moving into a new downtown venue.  This is because it does not occur.

The average minor league ballclub sees attendance increase by approximately 33% after moving to a new venue.  I know of no examples where, after such a move/attendance increase, attendance then fell to levels below that of the prior venue.

You are grasping for straws without doing your research.  Downtown baseball ALWAYS works--hence the push for it.  Why don't you come on down in two years and enjoy it?

Several reasons why the Drillers will have LOWER attendance downtown:

1.  Gasoline is now approx. $4.00 per gallon.
Are people going to drive downtown to watch a AA baseball team?

2.  Expect the $6.00 General Admission ticket prices to escalate, putting the price of General Admission tickets beyond the reach of more Joe Average Tulsans who are currently juggling higher prices for nearly EVERYTHING.

3.  There is, to put it mildly:  A parking PROBLEM.

4.  People think Greenwood = The 'Hood.

5. The 'Hood = V.F.W.

V.F.W. = Very FEW Whites.

See the Logic?

I sort of know how average middle-class people react to going near the 'hood Downtown.

It's a visceral reaction.

Danger signals abound once they leave the PERCEIVED safety of their moving automobile:

Hair stands up on the back of their head.

Nostrils flair.

Pulse and Breathing accelerates.

Palms sweat.

Mouth is Dry.

Brain is receiving signals:

DANGER

DANGER

DANGER

DANGER

DANGER

Fight or Flight?

Oh, by the way:  ENJOY the GAME.

Did I mention, YOU ARE THE GAME, tonite........

It's Wilding Time again, Downtown..............

Stuck in the past.......

So was the Central Park Jogger, mired in the 1980's.  Attacked in 1989, the victim of "wilding" lived in seclusion for the next 14 years.

On April 19, 1989, the 28-year-old investment banker was violently assaulted while jogging in New York City's Central Park.

She was raped and beaten almost to death. When found, she was suffering from severe hypothermia and blood loss, and her skull had been fractured.

The initial prognosis of her physicians was that she would die or remain in a permanent coma due to her injuries; she recovered fully, however, with no memory of the attack.

According to a police investigation, the culprits were gangs of teenagers who would assault strangers as part of an activity that became known as "wilding."

New York City detectives said the word was used by the suspects themselves to describe their actions to police.

You have no research, as Floyd points out.\

All the evidence points to the contrary.

Did you ever go to  Memphis before they built the ballpark?

Doubt it, you don't get out much.

It was much worse than the "hood" you call Greenwood.

Now that city is shining.

And their parking is MUCH worse than what you'll see downtown.

Floyd (and the city and the Drillers) gave you evidence and examples.

You have no counter-examples.

Just bigotry and hate.

With Queen Kathy's Krystal Kastle so close by, that's already a lost cause.

I think the DRILLERS believe they'll have less attendance, too.

Leave a 10,000+ seat stadium for a new 6,000 person capacity stadium is not the sign of an optimist.

On promotion nights, like free Q-T tickets, or $1.00 beer nights, they fill Driller Stadium.

10,000 = 6,000?

Not.

Yes, I was in downtown Memphis numerous times before the ballpark.

As for Memphis being worse than Greenwood, how could you tell? Both areas were/are quite dead and decidedly nonthreatening. It's kinda of like comparing 1.25 to 1 on a 10 scale. Differences were insignificant.
