According to this article in Urban Tulsa, used Japanese minitrucks will be legal for road use in Oklahoma this November.

Where could I find the enabling legislation for this change?  I'd like to see the legal specifications for these vehicles, and especially, I'd like to see if other lightweight vehicles could be made legal under this law.

Yeah they will.  That is awesome to, I'm from Oklahoma and moved to Arizona about 6 years ago.  They're driving around out here on the roads.  People get them tagged else where then drive them out here.  My dad really wants one to, he's a farmer and they have a great use on the farm.

I've started a dedicated forum on these truck if anyone wants more information.

I was driving through Pryor this last weekend and saw some of the trucks at this Pryor dealership, All American Imports LLC.
http://www.allamericanminitrucks.com/index.htm

Direct TV at 21st/Sheridan uses one of this type mini truck for a security vehicle to patrol the parking lots. I've spoken to the security guard about the trucks. You could stop by to see one up close.

If I thought I could fit in one, they'd make a good gas saver for toolin' around town!
Maybe I'd could fit in the 4 door version!

I'm actually really interested in these (the vans in particular).  They have some custom VW look conversions and supercharged versions with big windows and sunroof. Anybody know where you could buy these things around here?

This thing is a Suburu

Disclaimer from the posted websit All American Trucks: "
These are the ultimate replacement for the ATV, RTV, or Glorified Golf Cart and has so many more uses and are much more comfortable !!
You owe it to yourself to check out the Kei Class Mini Trucks from Japan as an alternative to a higher priced not similary equiped Mule, Rhino, Gator or other Off-Road Utility Vehicle that you are currently familar with.
They are a lot safer than an ATV, They have Heated , lockable cabs & some even have Cold AC.

We offer these for OFF-ROAD USE ONLY They are not legal for use on highways Some states are allowing them, even licenseing them, However according to current US Regulations we cannot, nor do we, import nor sell them, for anything other than OFF-ROAD USE All of our trucks have been modified with speed limiting devices to meet or exceed per EPA 40 CFR 85.1703. (A) not to exceed 25 MPH . Sorry about that. But that is the lay of the land & we will not break any laws that may govern these little trucks. This is the rules under which we import them & have no choice.

Thanks for that MrB.  And special thanks for including the link so in the future (assuming I remember, of course)I can find these myself.

I was wondering if this new law would allow, say, tube framed dune buggies or even go-carts on the road.  Apparently it does not.

Years ago my neighbor had a tube framed buggy that he said was street legal and the only thing he had to add to make it street legal was a windshield and wiper system. I rememered he had it tagged.

So does Oklahoma classify Dune Buggies as off road only? I read over title 47, but I must be missing it.

I've seen tagged 2 seater VW buggies, but is that really dune buggy??

Boy, those used trucks are expensive for 8-10 year old, High mileage (for non-roadworthy) trucks that you can't drive on the street. Kinda cute but I'll pass.

From allterrainminitrucks.com

How is it possible that Japanese Mini Trucks are such a good bargain?

Japanese laws provide an incentive for vehicle owners to buy newer vehicles earlier than we do here in the United States.  Unlike in America, taxes and insurance costs increase as a vehicle gets older, which prompts owners to trade in their vehicles earlier than we would expect.  This creates a surplus, and enables Americans to import these perfectly capable vehicles at low prices.  Plus, the average Japanese vehicle is driven only 6,000 miles per year… meaning these vehicles have years of valuable life left in them!  You can buy a few Japanese Mini Trucks for the cost of just one John Deere Gator or Kawasaki Mule!
