Bates flashes back to '57.

Bates needed to go a step further and explain the partial intent of 244 designed to cut that district and the adjoing north neighborhoods off from integration into downtown and South Tulsa....but, a decent stab at the truth.

The truth is that in 57 our city fathers were still trying like hell to continue hiding what the Race Riot really could do to our image in the long run.

Celie: [holding a knife to Albert's throat] I curse you. Until you do right by me everything you think about is gonna crumble!
Sofia: Don't do it Miss Celie. Don't trade places with what I been through.
Shug: Come on Miss Celie let's go to the car.
Sofia: He ain't worth it, he ain't worth it.
Albert: Who you think you is? You can't curse nobody. Look at you. You're black, you're poor, you're ugly, you're a woman, you're nothing at all!
Celie: Until you do right by me, everything you even think about gonna fail!
Grady: It's been a pleasure meeting all of you. Good-bye.
Sofia: Look like I came back just in time.
Old Mister: Well we need some stability around here, that's for sure.
Albert: I shoulda locked you up. Just let you out to work.
Celie: The jail you planned for me is the one you gonna rot in!
   Albert: I'ma knock you under...
Celie: Everything you done to me, you already under, you. I'm poor, I'm black, I may even be ugly, but, dear God, I'm here, I'm here!

The most dramatic description I have ever read of what happened is here.

"When you only have two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other."-Chinese proverb. "Arts a staple. Like bread or wine or a warm coat in winter. Those who think it is a luxury have only a fragment of a mind. Mans spirit grows hungry for art in the same way h

Might as well throw this out.... On the map we have made there is still some discussion as to where the limits of Greenwood should be. On the map we have now I went ahead and moved the area to encompas the blocks between Detroit and Cincinnati, which would put the Spaghetti Warehouse into Greenwood.  The suggestion has been that it really should not include those areas. If we do move the line back a block it would make Greenwood appear to be very small on the map. If you move the line South, you end up taking up part of what is now called the Blue Dome District.  I know that some of the Greenwood area is just north of Downtown.

Any suggestions or input as to where the lines should be?

Greenwood is a settlement reflecting the aftermath of war of 1860 supplemented by the white riot against the blacks in 1921.  It is easy to correct on lines of maps but after the passing of years we still must deal with the animosity we have created over the years.

Due to the cheap land or no cost land the developers are promoting the total obliteration of this once thriving part of the city.   The establishing of a base ball district in the area will not accomplish the removal of a hundred of some years this race has been humiliated.  The teen age gangs of yesterday prevail as grown citizens of Tulsa of today.  They should be given a chance to determine if the Greenwood area should be obviated forever.

It is time we move forward into un-chartered lands and quit the revamping our failures of yesterday.
Today we stand in ecstasy and view that we build today'
Tomorrow we will enter into the plea to have it torn away.
